Rape soon to become non-bailable offence – Minister

The FCT Minister of State, Dr Ramatu Aliyu, on Wednesday in Abuja, said that plans are underway to make rape non–bailable offence.

Aliyu made this known during the presentation of a compendium titled, “My COVID-19 Story; Voice of Hope and Resilience”, which chronicled different experiences of young girls during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

The book was compiled and published by the Helpline Foundation for the Needy, Abuja, under the leadership of Dr Jumai Ahmadu, who is also the founder.

Represented by Mrs Maria Ogbonnaya-Ngwu, Deputy Director Administration in the office of the Minister of State, Aliyu stressed the need to protect the dignity of the girl-child.

“It is also gratifying to know that in our dear President Muhammadu Buhari, lies a man that believes in the worth of the girl-child.

“We have been able to present to him various cases of gender-based violence in the Federal Executive Council.

“Let me assure you that laws will soon be rolled out, to serve as a deterrent to culprits that are guilty or people found culpable of abuses of the girl child.

“Unlike before, the rape case becomes bailable, but now we are working towards that it would no longer be a bailable offence.

“In the Federal Capital Territory, we have been able to give succour to the Girl-child, and able to encourage the Girl-child to believe in themselves.https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?client=ca-pub-8264632571551786&output=html&h=300&slotname=9168770906&adk=471354335&adf=1986380588&w=360&lmt=1602702706&rafmt=1&psa=1&guci=1.2.0.0.2.2.0.0&us_privacy=1—&format=360×300&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pmnewsnigeria.com%2F2020%2F10%2F14%2Frape-soon-to-become-non-bailable-offence-minister%2F&flash=0&fwr=1&fwrattr=true&rpe=1&resp_fmts=3&sfro=1&wgl=1&tt_state=W3siaXNzdWVyT3JpZ2luIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly9hZHNlcnZpY2UuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbSIsInN0YXRlIjowfV0.&dt=1602702772420&bpp=7&bdt=10429&idt=61442&shv=r20201008&cbv=r20190131&ptt=9&saldr=aa&abxe=1&prev_fmts=0x0%2C360x300%2C360x300%2C360x300&nras=1&correlator=6809749530006&frm=20&pv=1&ga_vid=481448840.1602701162&ga_sid=1602702834&ga_hid=1202719191&ga_fc=0&iag=0&icsg=2931449397248&dssz=72&mdo=0&mso=0&u_tz=120&u_his=2&u_java=0&u_h=640&u_w=360&u_ah=640&u_aw=360&u_cd=24&u_nplug=0&u_nmime=0&adx=0&ady=2937&biw=360&bih=560&scr_x=0&scr_y=3377&eid=42530671%2C21066819%2C21066973&oid=3&pvsid=1438190947344293&pem=851&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pmnewsnigeria.com%2F&rx=0&eae=0&fc=1924&brdim=0%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C360%2C0%2C360%2C616%2C365%2C624&vis=1&rsz=%7C%7CeE%7C&abl=CS&pfx=0&fu=9344&bc=31&ifi=4&uci=a!4&fsb=1&xpc=C9SXd7yT0f&p=https%3A//www.pmnewsnigeria.com&dtd=61509

“The Girl-child is not subordinate to any other child. The administration will continue to boost this, and continue to preach this experience and embark on advocacy”.
