In order to boost the availability of Petroleum products at a cheaper rate across all the parts of the country, marketers in the Petroleum would be encouraged to use other means of transporting petroleum products than the use of oil tankers on the road .
This was made known by the Executive Secretary of Petroleum Equalization Fund, PEF, Ahmed Bobboi on Sunday in an interactive session with journalists in Abuja .
The PEF boss while giving an insight to the workings of the PEF, said plans are afoot to commence the transportation of petroleum products via railways. According to him, with the rejuvenation of railways by the Federal Government, transportation would be very cheap and safe .
“We are also looking at the possibility of petroleum marketers transporting their products by rail because government is providing rail lines across the country.
He also urged marketers to consider the use of railways as an alternative to road transport adding that apart from the cheap aspect of it , the use of rail would also help lift pressure on roads which are under heavy strain of wear and tear as the result of usage by heavy tankers
“It will save cost and reduce pressure on the roads because most state governments are complaining that heavy duty vehicles have destroyed the roads and I think it will reduce the cost of road maintenance for government,” Bobboi said.
He further that marketers would have the opportunity of lifting more products if they use the rail than road :
“If marketers patronise railway system it will increase the volume of petroleum product being transported because one rail journey will take 20 or more cargoes of the product, he added.
Ahmed Bobboi speaking further revealed the plans of PEF to combat deforestation and reduce its attendant health hazard by subsidizing prices of cooking gas and making sure that cooking is made available to every house hold in the country at affordable rate.
