Ghana: Stop privacy bill and tongue prayers, focus on the public – Onipayede to Parliament

Few days ago there was some news trending on social media which was headed “MPs pray against LGBTQ+ ahead of private member’s bill to criminalize it in Ghana”.

The story continues to read that, Members of Ghana’s parliament have been captured in a video praying fervently against the threat of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ+) activities in the country.

It is alleged that the prayer was to help the lawmakers in their deliberations on a private member’s bill that has been submitted to the legislature to amend and tighten the grey areas in the current law on the phenomenon, as well as prescribe sanctions to be meted out to violators of the law.

This has pushed the Declined 2020 presidential aspirant Onipayede Ossom Teye to say is sad news and Ghana’s Parliamentarians are losing focus.

” Their mandate is to make laws to protect people and the land (public interest) but rather leaving us insecure, praying in tongue and passing bills against people’s privacy, when your old laws cannot work in public what makes you think new privacy law will work?” Onipayede asked.

“The 1960 criminal code section 104 is already against LGBTQ+, which the Unnatural Carnal Knowledge law says it all…..

Section 104—Unnatural Carnal Knowledge.

(1) Whoever has unnatural carnal knowledge—

(a) of any person of the age of sixteen years or over without his consent shall be
guilty of a first degree felony and shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a
term of not less than five years and not more than twenty-five years; or

(b) of any person of sixteen years or over with his consent is guilty of a
misdemeanour; or

(c) of any animal is guilty of a misdemeanour.

(2) Unnatural carnal knowledge is sexual intercourse with a person in an unnatural
manner or with an animal” Onipayede emphasized.

“All we need is enforcement and security, the ordinary Ghanaians are been gunned down on our streets, but the mandate of our legislature had now turned into Tongue Prayers and Privacy bill with the aim of diverting Ghanaians mind from the insecurity and unnecessary approving loans for projects which are not executed but rather end us in huge amount of judgment debt to be paid by future generations” He ended.
