Major Christopher Datong, the military officer who was abducted by Fulani bandits on August 24 , 2021 during a raid at Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna, has been rescued .
The Deputy Director of Nigeria Army Public Relations, First Division, Nigerian Army , Col Ezindu Idimah who broke the news on Friday night, explained that Major Datong was rescued after series of carefully planned operation which was coordinated in conjunction with Air Task Force, Department of State Services and other security agencies.
Col Idimah explained that the operation led to the discovery of the hideouts of the bandits along the Afaka- Birnin Gwari axis.He went on to explain that after exchange of gunfire, the bandits were eventually subdued with many of them killed and their camps destroyed.
He also explained that after the bandits were subdued, Maj Datong was rescued, however,he suffered slight injury.
“The troops arrived at a camp suspected to be the location where Maj CL Datong was being held. At the camp, the troops exchanged fire with the bandits overwhelmed them superior fire.
“In the process, the gallant troops were able to rescue the abducted officer. However, the officer sustained a minor injury but has been treated in a medical facility and handed over to NDA for further action,” he said.
The operation, he concluded was, conducted on the night of September 17, 2021.
In recent times,the military has upped the ante against bandits by taking the fight to them directly in the camps and killing scores of the bandits .
The rescue of Major Datong would not only boost the moral of the military but it would also give hope to beleaguered residents of kaduna state who felt that they have been left at the mercy of bandits by the government.
