The Osun State Police Command has identified its officer who killed a 33-year-old man, Kabiru Babai, and shot a truck driver in Osogbo, in the hands.
Babai, a rig operator with Shekeenah Zelter Global Concept was fatally shot by the trigger-happy police officer on Friday, December 3, 2021, while fixing the company’s truck that broke down along Ikirun/Osogbo road, Ota-Efun area of Osogbo.
The deceased, who has a child and a pregnant wife, came to Osun State from Bauchi about a year ago to make a living.
Spokesperson of the command, SP Yemisi Opalola, in a statement on Saturday, said that Sergeant Moses Samuel has been detained.
“The Osun State Police Command in its continued efforts to curtail all forms of indiscipline and acts of unprofessionalism, has arrested and detained the police officer, Sgt Moses Samuel who shot at one Mallam Kabiru Babai ‘m’ 33years yesterday, 3rd December, 2021 around Kobogbogboe/Ota-efun Area, Osogbo,” the statement reads.
“Investigation and disciplinary actions have commenced and the suspect will be arraigned in court after completion of the Orderly Room Trial. This we hope will serve as deterrent to other officers of his likes,”
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Olawale Olokode, psc is using this medium to express his condolences to the victim’s family, colleagues at work, and friends, and pray to God to put an end to this kind of unfortunate incident. He also assures members of the public that, justice will be served.” the PPRO added.
It was gathered that late Babai was shot in the chest after protesting over the shooting of a truck driver, Harisu Musa, by a policeman.
It was gathered that the company’s rig truck driven by Musa developed a fault at Ota-Efun area of the state capital and after efforts to repair it proved futile, the driver attempted to make a detour back to the office, however, the engine went off.
According to an eyewitness, some policemen in a commercial minibus known as Korope were allegedly chasing suspects along Osogbo Ikirun road when they stumbled on the truck.
“The bus parked, maybe because the suspects manoeuvred through their way past the truck, and about three gun-wielding policemen alighted from it and confronted the driver. They were speaking in English the driver and the chief Operator only understand Hausa and were responding in the language. Suddenly, the policeman shot the driver in the hand,” the witness narrated.
“The deceased’s quickly moved closer to the scene and challenged the policeman for shooting his partner, the policeman descended on him, hit him severally with the butt of the gun before shooting him on the chest.” he said.
Angry residents descended on the policeman, beat him to stupor before he was taken to the police station, along with the body of the rig operator.
