The Director of St Pope John Paul II School of Evangelization, Graceland Zaria and the Parish Priest of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU) Zaria, Rev Fr Sebastian Vincent has called on Christians to borrow a leaf from Jesus and forgive those who have offended them. He made this call in his parish on Palm Sunday, 10th April 2022 when he built his message on the day’s Passion account of St Luke.
The priest reflected on the characters of Judas and Peter who betrayed their Master in their own ways in asserting that it is more painful to be betrayed by one’s allies than by strangers..
“An empire is destroyed by those within it and not by strangers.” Fr. Vincent intimated. “Judas and Peter were from the band of Jesus – they were His very own. The people He chose on His own. People will betray you but it is more painful when you are betrayed by someone you trust. The journey that Jesus went through is also our own journey. Like Peter, some people will promise to remain with you but when things become tough, you will not see them.”
“It is no doubt that some of us are still struggling to forgive. Some have even sworn not to forgive because of a betrayal but Jesus wishes that we become like Him. Let us put on the likeness of Jesus in such times. Even though it is not easy to forgive, it is not impossible. Jesus who called you is with you in this journey. He will never forsake you.”
Acknowledging that some of them are already victims of betrayals, the director noted that it is very easy to accuse others of betrayals but pointed that there are times when they play the roles of Judas and Peter and tasked such participants to turn new leaves.
