According to a Times of India report, KL Rahul has emerged as a leading contender to take over the Delhi Capitals captaincy ahead of IPL 2027. While the franchise is yet to make a final decision, management is expected to hold further discussions on its leadership plans in the coming months.

“It is still early days and the franchise will likely have more discussions on this front in the coming days. KL Rahul is emerging as a strong choice for management, but no decision has been made regarding this,” the report stated.

Rahul enjoyed an excellent IPL 2026 campaign and answered his critics with an aggressive approach at the crease. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 593 runs in 14 innings for Delhi Capitals at an average of 45.62 and an impressive strike rate of 174.41.

KL Rahul Brings Proven IPL Captaincy Experience to Delhi Capitals

KL Rahul brings plenty of captaincy experience, having led Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants across five IPL seasons. In 64 matches as captain, he has registered 31 wins and 31 losses, while two matches ended in ties or no results, giving him a 50% win rate.

Rahul captained Punjab Kings from 2020 to 2021. The team won 12 of 28 matches, lost 14, and recorded two ties. Despite Rahul winning the Orange Cap in 2020, Punjab finished sixth in both seasons and missed the playoffs.

He enjoyed greater success with LSG between 2022 and 2024. Rahul led the side in 36 matches, winning 19 and losing 17. He guided Lucknow to the playoffs in 2022 and 2023, but the team was eliminated in the Eliminator both times. In 2024, Lucknow finished seventh and missed out on the playoffs.

Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2026 Campaign Ended in Another Playoff Miss

Delhi registered wins against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals. However, they suffered defeats to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Delhi finished strongly with victories over Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Kolkata Knight Riders. However, the late resurgence came too late to keep their playoff hopes alive.
