Amazon’s Alexa+ AI chatbot became available to everyone in the US in February, and now it’s on its way to India it seems, with support for Hindi no less. The company is inviting users in the country to test out the Hindi language version.
Amazon sent out emails to some customers in India, asking them to fill out a form in Hindi by June 22 if they want to join the beta-testing program for the Hindi version of Alexa+. Those who enrolled in the program will be notified when the testing experience is ready for them in Hindi.
Obviously, this being beta software, bugs may be present, and Amazon also warned the local users that Alexa+ might give inaccurate information or “mispronounce local nuances”. The company confirmed to TechCrunch that it is testing Alexa+ in India but didn’t share more details officially.
It’s unclear when Amazon plans to launch Alexa+ in India. The original Alexa arrived in the country in English in 2017 and it gained support for Hindi in 2019. As more than 600 million people speak Hindi, supporting the language in Alexa+ is naturally very important. After its initial launch in the US, Alexa+ is now also available in the UK, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Austria, France, and Germany. Amazon Prime members get access to it for free, while those who aren’t Prime subscribers can pay a monthly fee to use it.
