The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is desperate to take Andy Flower on board as Test captain, in place of Brendon McCullum, who was sacked from his Test team duties days after a home series defeat against New Zealand. Flower will be allowed to skip Test matches for IPL if he takes up the England red-ball head coach job.
Stephen Fleming is also believed to be in the fray as his journey with the Chennai Super Kings came to an end on Monday. With Fleming joining the race to become England’s next coach for the Tests, ECB is ready to offer Flower a split coaching role.
England cricket board is willing to offer Andy Flower a split coaching role
ECB’s deep interest in Andy Flower reflects when Richard Gould, the England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive, said that they were open to offering the experienced coach a flexible role including a split-coaching structure.
Flower is associated with multiple franchises for different T20 leagues across the globe, including the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he won two IPL trophies in the previous two seasons.
As the ECB wants success in the Tests, their desperation for the Zimbabwe cricket legend makes sense, as he helped the England National Cricket Team to win three Ashes between 2009 and 2014. It was the period when the Three Lions became the No.1 in the ICC Test rankings as well.
Will ECB remain firm when Andy Flower joins RCB for IPL?
If ECB allows Flower to work on a split coaching condition, then the coach can carry RCB’s coaching responsibilities as well. But will he accept ECB’s offer even if he is allowed to carry his other responsibilities with the other teams? The question remains.
Former India keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who is also the batting coach of RCB, raises a crucial point. England cricketers like Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, and Will Jacks are among England’s star cricketers who are associated with IPL teams. Most England cricketers like Harry Brook and Ben Duckett mostly prioritize national cricket team duties over the Indian Premier League.
Jofra Archer, who played the entire IPL 2026 season for the Rajasthan Royals, had to hear a lot of criticism from some former international cricketers for putting the franchise league ahead of England cricket team fixtures. If the ECB allows Andy Flower to carry on his IPL commitments, then what will be their stance on their players’ participation in the T20 league? It will be interesting to see.
“Flower is thought to be open to a conversation with England, but would not want to immediately walk away from his roles with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), where he has won the past two IPLs, and London Spirit,” The Telegraph claimed in their report.
“Having previously worked with Trent Rockets, his first Hundred campaign with Spirit begins next week, and could end just three days before the first Test against Pakistan, at Headingley on August 19. England want to have their new coach in charge by then,” it added.
Stephen Fleming could also be in consideration as Brendon McCullum’s successor
Stephen Fleming’s departure from Chennai Super Kings makes the situation more interesting as he also carries a bag full of experience as a coach.
As the former New Zealand captain, he must also have a connection with Brendon McCullum, who played under his leadership. However, Stephen Fleming, as England’s Test team coach, currently remains only as a possibility, not as intense as Andy Flower’s chances.
