Team India kicked off the T20I series against Zimbabwe in emphatic fashion, registering a comprehensive seven-wicket victory in the opening match at the Harare Sports Club on Thursday. After opting to bowl first, Shreyas Iyer‘s men produced a disciplined bowling display to restrict the hosts to a below-par total before a sensational knock from teenage opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi ensured the chase was completed with ease. Fast bowler Mayank Yadav was named Player of the Match for his impressive spell that laid the foundation for India’s commanding win.
Mayank Yadav dismantle Zimbabwe’s batting lineup
Having won the toss, India chose to field first and immediately justified the decision. Mayank struck with the very first ball of the innings, dismissing Brian Bennett for a golden duck with a trademark express delivery. Zimbabwe struggled to build momentum thereafter as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Ben Curran made a brisk 10 from eight deliveries before Prince Yadav removed him, while Dion Myers managed only six runs from 14 balls. Captain Sikandar Raza also failed to make an impact, departing for four as India’s bowlers kept the scoring under control.
The only meaningful resistance came from Wesley Madhevere and Ryan Burl. Madhevere played a composed knock of 39 off 34 balls, striking three boundaries and a six, while Burl anchored the latter half of the innings with 26 from 35 deliveries. Tadiwanashe Marumani chipped in with a useful 27 off 20 balls, helping Zimbabwe cross the 120-run mark.
Mayank was the standout performer with figures of 2/18 from his four overs, consistently troubling the batters with pace and accuracy. Prince matched him with 2/19, while Ravi Bishnoi and Shivam Dube claimed one wicket each. Their collective effort restricted Zimbabwe to 125/7 in 20 overs, leaving India with a manageable target.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi steals the show with explosive maiden T20I fifty
India’s chase suffered an early setback when Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for just one by Blessing Muzarabani. However, Vaibhav responded in breathtaking fashion, taking the attack to Zimbabwe’s bowlers from the outset. The young opener smashed four boundaries and four towering sixes during a scintillating 50 off only 19 balls, putting the visitors firmly in control of the chase. His fearless strokeplay shifted the momentum completely and ensured Zimbabwe never had an opportunity to apply sustained pressure.
After Vaibhav’s departure, Ishan Kishan continued the charge with a fluent 35 from 24 deliveries, featuring three fours and two sixes. Captain Iyer played the perfect supporting role, remaining composed with 28 off 24 balls as India steadily closed in on victory. Although Richard Ngarava dismissed Kishan and Muzarabani claimed two wickets, Zimbabwe’s bowlers had little to defend. Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on six as India comfortably reached 126/3 in just 13.2 overs, sealing victory with 40 balls to spare.

Mayank Yadav with good pace, getting extra bounce and seam movement in that first over…find a way to keep him fit and firing and you’ll have a generational white-ball bowler.
