Shubman Gill set to feature in inaugural Sher-e-Punjab T20 League after Sri Lanka Test series

India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill is set for a busy schedule over the next few weeks. The stylish batter will first lead India in the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka before turning out in the inaugural edition of the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League later this month.

The Test series against Sri Lanka begins on August 15 in Galle, with the second and final match scheduled to be played in Colombo from August 23. Following the conclusion of the red-ball assignment, Gill will return home to participate in Punjab’s newly-launched domestic T20 competition.

According to The Indian Express, Gill, who is not part of India’s T20I setup, will feature in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League, which gets underway on August 30, just two days after the conclusion of India’s Sri Lanka tour. Alongside Gill, Gurnoor Brar is also expected to join the tournament after completing national duties, while India T20I stars Arshdeep Singh and Abhishek Sharma are set to take part as well.

Speaking at an event related to the tournament, Gill backed the initiative and expressed confidence that it would provide a strong platform for aspiring cricketers from Punjab.

“The Sher-e-Punjab T20 League is a fantastic platform for young cricketers to showcase their talent and progress towards playing for Punjab and India. Punjab has always produced outstanding cricketers, and I believe this league will help discover many more. I congratulate the Punjab Cricket Association for this wonderful initiative and wish the league great success,” Gill said at an event related to the tournament on Sunday.

The inaugural edition of the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League will feature six franchises representing Amritsar, Fazilka, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Mohali, and Bathinda. The player auction is scheduled to take place on August 9, with each team required to have one marquee player and at least two icon players in their squad.

A total of 27 matches will be played in a round-robin format before the champions are crowned on September 13.

Gill will enter the tournament on the back of another prolific IPL campaign. Leading Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026, the right-handed opener amassed 732 runs in 16 matches at an average of 45.75 and an impressive strike rate of 196.22, once again underlining his credentials as one of the country’s premier batters across formats.
