However, Jammu & Kashmir has contributed very few players to the Indian team. Despite the region producing talented cricketers, only a handful have managed to earn an India cap.
Now, that list has a new name.

Ranji Trophy Hero Who Forced the Selectors to Take Notice
Auqib Nabi’s rise has been built on consistent performances in domestic cricket.
He played a crucial role in Jammu & Kashmir’s historic Ranji Trophy-winning campaign during the 2025-26 season. The team stunned several traditional powerhouses, including Mumbai, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, before lifting the Ranji Trophy for the first time in its history.
Nabi was one of the biggest reasons behind that success.
The right-arm pacer finished the season with 60 wickets in just 17 innings at a remarkable average of 12.56, including seven five-wicket hauls.
It was one of the finest bowling performances seen in the domestic season and established him as one of India’s most exciting fast-bowling prospects.
Nabi’s success did not begin in the 2025-26 season.
He had already impressed during the previous Ranji Trophy campaign, claiming 44 wickets in 15 innings. His back-to-back outstanding seasons made him a strong contender for higher honours.
Many believed he deserved a place in India’s squad for the Afghanistan Test series. However, the selectors opted for other fast bowlers instead.
His patience has now been rewarded.
Following Jasprit Bumrah’s injury, the selectors finally handed Nabi his maiden India call-up for the Sri Lanka Test series.
Only the Third Player from Jammu & Kashmir to Play for India
Auqib Nabi now joins a very exclusive list.
Before him, only Parvez Rasool and Umran Malik had represented India from Jammu & Kashmir.
His selection is another milestone for a region that has steadily produced talented cricketers despite limited representation at the international level.
Parvez Rasool Opened the Door
Parvez Rasool became the first cricketer from Jammu & Kashmir to represent India. He made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in Mirpur on June 15, 2014.The off-spinning all-rounder delivered a disciplined performance, finishing with 2 wickets in his full quota of ten overs.Despite a promising debut, he never got an extended run in the ODI side.
Three years later, he made his only T20I appearance against England before eventually falling out of India’s plans.Although his international career was brief, Rasool created history by becoming the first player from Jammu & Kashmir to wear the India jersey.
Umran Malik Became India’s Pace Sensation
The second player from Jammu & Kashmir to represent India was Umran Malik. Unlike Rasool, Umran arrived with enormous hype after consistently bowling above 150 km/h in the Indian Premier League.
His raw pace immediately caught the attention of selectors and fans alike.
India had rarely produced bowlers capable of maintaining such high speeds consistently, making Umran one of the country’s most exciting fast-bowling prospects. He made his T20I debut against Ireland on June 26, 2022, before also representing India in One-Day Internationals.
So far, Umran has played 10 ODIs and 8 T20Is for India. While injuries and inconsistent line and length have slowed his progress, many believe he remains in contention for an international comeback if he regains full fitness and consistency.
Auqib Nabi Has the Chance to Create His Own Legacy
Auqib Nabi now has an opportunity to write his own story in Indian cricket.
His domestic record shows he has earned this opportunity through performances rather than potential alone.
The challenge at the international level will be far tougher, but if he can carry his Ranji Trophy form into the Indian team, Jammu & Kashmir may soon have another long-term representative in the national side.
