What Works and What Doesn’t?

Not everything in 83 (2021) hits the mark, but a lot more of it works than doesn’t. The film still offers a sincere, well-crafted tribute to one of Indian cricket’s biggest moments. The recreated match sequences, the period detail and the emotional pull of a real underdog story remind viewers why this win still matters decades later. At the same time, a few pacing and writing choices keep the film from feeling as tight as it could have.

The biggest issue is that 83 sometimes leans on the audience already knowing and caring about the 1983 World Cup, which makes a few of its emotional peaks land harder for older viewers than younger ones. The middle section, in particular, revisits the same beats of doubt and pressure a little too often before the story picks up speed again heading into the final.

As the film builds toward its climax, though, it finds its footing. The tension of the Lord’s sequence and the emotional payoff of the win carry real weight, and that’s ultimately what makes 83 memorable, even with its rough patches along the way.

Why Did 83 Become a Box Office Disaster, in Our View?

83 released on a large scale, both in India and overseas, but faced a tough theatrical run. Omicron wave likely played some part, several states brought back night curfews right around the film’s release, but at Inside Box Office, we don’t think that tells the whole story. 83’s biggest drawback was structural: it leaned too heavily on cricket action and not enough on the human drama around it. Films like MS Dhoni worked because they balanced sport with personal stakes, relationships, and emotional arcs that pulled in audiences who weren’t necessarily cricket fans. 83, by contrast, is technically well made, but it never builds that same emotional throughline. This is why the film worked mainly in multiplexes, where audiences came in already invested in the 1983 story. The movie struggled to find an audience in smaller towns and B- and C-centers, where drama-driven, emotion-first storytelling tends to travel further.  

Combined with a high production budget, reportedly ₹260 crore, the film’s worldwide collection of around ₹185 crore wasn’t enough to break even, and it ended up labeled a flop despite the goodwill it earned from critics.
