The two-match Sri Lanka vs India Test Series is set to begin on August 15, and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has taken an interesting step to bring more fans to the stadiums.
From India’s point of view, this is a very important Test series. If the Indian team wants to strengthen its chances of reaching the World Test Championship final, a strong result in Sri Lanka will be crucial. A 2-0 clean sweep would give India the maximum possible points from the series.
For Sri Lanka, the series is also an opportunity to attract more fans towards Test cricket. India’s presence usually creates plenty of interest, and Sri Lanka Cricket now wants to make the most of it.
Free Entry for Fans During Sri Lanka vs India Test Series
Sri Lanka Cricket has announced that fans will be able to watch the upcoming Test matches free of charge from selected areas of the grounds.
However, this does not mean that every seat inside the stadium will be available for free. The free admission will apply to selected areas, including grass embankments, with spectators allowed to enter through specific gates.
Announcing the decision, Sri Lanka Cricket said:
“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that public admissions to the upcoming Test Series between Sri Lanka and India will be free of charge thus providing cricket fans with an excellent opportunity to witness world-class Test cricket.”
SLC also clarified that free admission would be available through selected gates.
At Galle, spectators will be able to enter free of charge through Gate No. 4. At the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo, free entry will be available through Gates No. 3, 4 and 5.

India vs Sri Lanka Test Series Schedule
The first Test between Sri Lanka and India will be played in Galle from August 15 to August 19.
The second and final Test is scheduled to be played in Colombo from August 23 to August 27.
Sri Lanka Cricket has also encouraged families, youngsters and cricket fans from across the country to make use of the initiative.
“Sri Lanka Cricket warmly invites cricket enthusiasts, young aspiring cricketers, families and sports fans from across the country to take advantage of the initiative and experience the excitement of international Test cricket between Sri Lanka and India,” SLC said.
Why Has Sri Lanka Cricket Made Test Match Entry Free?
The idea behind the decision looks quite clear. Sri Lanka Cricket wants to attract more spectators to the grounds while also creating more interest around Test cricket.
Interest in Test cricket has been a concern in several parts of the cricketing world, especially when compared with shorter formats. Making entry free in selected areas could encourage more people, particularly young fans and families, to watch international Test cricket from the stadium.
Crowd attendance during the Lanka Premier League has also been a cause for concern. Despite the tournament being played in the popular T20 format, some matches witnessed relatively low attendance.
Keeping that in mind, Sri Lanka Cricket’s decision to offer free admission for selected areas during the Sri Lanka vs India Test Series could help bring more fans to the grounds.
With India touring Sri Lanka and important World Test Championship points at stake, the two-match series already has plenty of context. Free entry for spectators could now add some much-needed atmosphere in the stands as well.
