The movie is set in the 1920s. It follows Komaram Bheem who goes undercover in Delhi to rescue a young girl taken by a British officer and Alluri Sitarama Raju who is a British-appointed policeman secretly working toward his own revolutionary goals. The two men form an unlikely friendship, unaware of each other’s true identities, before their paths eventually collide with the larger fight against colonial rule. RRR stands for Rise Roar Revolt, a title that captures the film’s core spirit of resistance and rebellion against colonial oppression. In Telugu, the film is also styled as a tribute to its three lead men: Rajamouli, Ram Charan, and Rama Rao Jr.

RRR (2022) takes real historical figures and imagines a meeting that never actually happened. Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem were genuine revolutionaries; Rajamouli connected the parallels between their lives and imagined what might have unfolded had their paths crossed. The film deliberately fills in an undocumented period in their real lives using that gap to build a fictional friendship and shared rebellion. The Visuals and Music of RRR (2022)

RRR isn’t just heard, it’s felt. The action sequences are staged on a scale rarely attempted in Indian cinema. The fire-and-water entry scene and the climactic bridge confrontation stand out the most, blending real stunt work with heavy VFX. Each major set piece is shot with sweeping wide shots and slow-motion heroics, giving the film the weight of a mythological showdown rather than a straightforward period drama. Composed by M.M. Keeravani, the soundtrack matches that scale beat for beat, blending high-energy anthems with emotionally rich compositions that carry the story’s patriotic core. 

• Naatu Naatu – The film’s biggest breakout track, later winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Its raw, high-energy choreography, performed live by N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan, gave it a viral, dance-challenge-friendly appeal that carried it well beyond the film’s core audience.
• Komuram Bheemudo – A soulful, rousing number tied to Bheem’s tribal roots
• Dosti – A tender track reflecting the bond between the two lead characters
• Etthara Jenda – A stirring anthem built around resistance and pride

Our view is that the music carries a lot of the film’s weight. The background score builds tension right before a big stunt lands, and “Naatu Naatu” turns a simple dance-off into one of the film’s most talked-about scenes. That’s the real strength of RRR’s soundtrack. It’s a big reason the film’s biggest moments stayed with audiences long after they left the theatre.

What Works and What Doesn’t in RRR?

RRR delivers on almost everything the RRR trailer promised. We think it’s rare for a film this big to actually live up to its own hype, but RRR mostly does, even if a few of its choices don’t land as cleanly as others. 

It’s also worth saying that RRR was always fighting its own maker’s shadow. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion had already set an extraordinary benchmark for Rajamouli, and while RRR doesn’t disappoint by any measure, it doesn’t quite reach the same heights. Our view is that Baahubali 2 remains probably the high point of Indian cinema, and RRR, for all its scale and craft, plays a very close second rather than a clear successor.

Was RRR a Hit or a Flop?

According to RRR audience reviews, it was a massive global success, grossing over ₹1,250.90 crore on a ₹550 crore budget. After a record-breaking ₹214 crore opening day, it achieved rare international crossover success. At Inside Box Office, we believe the film’s success in its home markets of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana was expected, but what stood out to us was how far RRR’s reach extended internationally. It became one of the rare Indian films to cross over with international audiences. In the USA, word-of-mouth among Western viewers was strong enough that the film returned to theatres multiple times after its original run. Australia saw a similar reception. RRR went on to surpass Padmaavat’s collection to become the highest-grossing Indian film of all time at the Australian box office at that point. 

Japan turned into RRR’s biggest overseas story of all. The film opened there in October 2022 and steadily climbed the charts, eventually overtaking Rajinikanth’s Muthu to become the highest-grossing Indian film in the country’s history. By the end of its run, RRR had amassed a historic ¥2.42 billion (approx. ₹136.21 crore) in Japan, with lifetime footfalls estimated at around 1,550,000, a record for an Indian film that remains unmatched in the country.
