Devdutt Padikkal Grabs His Chance After Sai Sudharsan Injury
Padikkal was not initially the first-choice option for the No. 3 position.
Sai Sudharsan had been backed by the Indian team management and was ahead in the scheme of things. Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill had shown faith in the young left-hander.
But Sai’s injury opened the door for Padikkal.
And Padikkal made sure he did not waste the opportunity.
Even before the Test started, he had given the team management a strong indication of his form by scoring a century in the warm-up match.
That knock gave him rhythm, confidence and belief.
He carried the same confidence into the first Test and produced an innings he will remember for the rest of his career.

The best thing about Padikkal’s batting was how comfortable he looked against spin.
He used his feet well.
