Trent Boult has finally ended a 17-year wait by registering the first five-wicket haul of his T20 career. The New Zealand fast bowler returned outstanding figures of 5/24 for Edinburgh Castle Rockers against Glasgow Cosmic in the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL) 2026.
For a bowler of Boult’s quality and experience, it is quite surprising that he had never taken five wickets in a T20 innings before this match.
He has been one of the best new-ball bowlers in world cricket for years, but the five-wicket mark had somehow remained out of his reach in the shortest format.
That wait has now ended in the first edition of the ETPL.
Trent Boult First T20 Five-Wicket Haul Comes in ETPL 2026
Boult has built his reputation around his ability to swing the new ball and pick up wickets in the powerplay.
Whether playing international cricket for New Zealand or franchise cricket around the world, facing Boult with a new ball has never been easy.
However, a T20 five-for was missing from his long list of achievements.
Boult’s senior T20 career dates back to 2009, making this five-wicket haul particularly special. Around 17 years after starting his T20 journey, the left-arm pacer finally has his first five-for in the format.
And he did it in style.
Against Glasgow Cosmic, Boult completed his four overs with outstanding figures of five wickets for just 24 runs.

Boult Removes Jason Roy and Richie Berrington
Boult did not just pick up five wickets; there were some important names among his victims.
Former England opener Jason Roy and experienced Scotland batter Richie Berrington were among the batters dismissed by the New Zealand pacer.
Boult then went through the lower order to complete the first five-wicket haul of his T20 career.

The third match of ETPL 2026 was played between Edinburgh Castle Rockers and Glasgow Cosmic.
Bowling for Edinburgh, Boult kept striking at regular intervals as Glasgow were restricted to 115 in 20 overs.
His final figures of 4-0-24-5 were easily the standout bowling performance of the innings.

Why Boult’s First T20 Five-For Is So Surprising
This achievement becomes even more interesting when we look at Boult’s career.
The left-arm pacer has played T20 cricket around the world and has been a key bowler in major competitions, including the IPL.
His biggest strength has always been taking wickets with the new ball, especially when there is some swing available.
That is why it is difficult to believe that a bowler of his quality had gone through such a long T20 career without taking five wickets in an innings.
Boult has troubled some of the world’s best batters and has regularly delivered in the powerplay.
Still, the five-for remained missing.
