Cabinet May Clear Critical Minerals Pacts with Germany, Canada

Date:

India is stepping up its push to secure key raw materials for the future. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is likely to approve separate cooperation pacts with Germany and Canada in the critical minerals sector on 24th February, according to sources.

The proposed agreement with Germany will focus on joint exploration, sustainable mining practices, strengthening supply chains and technology transfer. A similar Joint Declaration of Intent with Canada is also expected to get Cabinet approval.

These moves come as countries worldwide compete to secure minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earth elements. These are essential for clean energy, electric vehicles and advanced technologies. For India, the partnerships support its broader energy security goals. Additionally, they aid the push for self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The expected approvals also align with the government’s Critical Minerals Mission launched last year. Furthermore, they relate to recent mineral block auctions under the amended mining law.
