David Warner has responded publicly after Rohit Sharma named the wrong Indian player while recounting a well-known on-field exchange from the first Test of the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Adelaide Oval.
Rohit is set to appear on a new television show titled Family Full House, which is scheduled to premiere on September 19, 2026. In a promo for the programme, Rohit recalled a confrontation involving Warner and credited Shikhar Dhawan as the player who rushed in from the covers to stand up to Warner. Warner replied to the video on Instagram with the words, ‘Dhawan was nowhere in this entire frame’.
Cricket fans and social media users quickly identified the error, noting that the two players were involved in two entirely separate incidents during the fourth day of that Adelaide Test, not a single shared confrontation.
What actually happened at Adelaide in 2014?
The first incident occurred in the second session of the fourth day. Varun Aaron had dismissed Warner off a no-ball, and after Warner was called back by the umpires, he shouted towards the bowler. Dhawan then came in from his fielding position and aggressively remonstrated with Warner, stopping play in the process. Warner and Dhawan were fined 15 and 30 per cent of their respective match fees for their roles in that exchange.
The second incident was separate and took place closer to the close of play on the same day. Virat Kohli, who was serving as India’s acting captain in the absence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, argued with Steven Smith following an lbw appeal off Rohit Sharma’s bowling. Kohli was fined 30 per cent of his match fee for that altercation.
All three players charged in connection with the two incidents — Warner, Dhawan and Kohli — were cited under Level 1 Article 2.1.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which covers conduct contrary to the spirit of the game or conduct that brings the game into disrepute. Each player admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Jeff Crowe, who also spoke to both captains about their responsibilities.
Warner acknowledged at the time that he may have responded too strongly but said it was part of the game. Australia won the Test by 48 runs.
Rohit’s promo appears to have conflated the two distinct incidents, attributing Dhawan’s involvement in the first confrontation to the second, in which Kohli was the central figure. Warner’s Instagram reply, described as playful in tone rather than hostile, pointed directly at that mix-up. Family Full House is due to premiere on September 19, 2026.
