England overcame an early wobble in their chase to defeat Pakistan by eight wickets at Edgbaston and complete a 3-0 whitewash in the Test series. The hosts were rocked by two wickets in the opening over while chasing 130, but Joe Root and Jordan Cox kept their composure and produced an unbeaten century partnership to finish the job. Root’s unbeaten 62 and Cox’s 59 not out ensured England wrapped up another convincing victory before lunch.
Pakistan collapse in front of England’s bowling attack
Pakistan’s first innings lasted just 133 runs, putting them on the back foot almost immediately. Saud Shakeel offered some resistance with a patient 43, but England’s bowling attack maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings.
Josh Tongue was the standout bowler, finishing with impressive figures of 4/42, while Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer claimed three wickets apiece. Robinson was particularly economical, conceding just 15 runs for his three wickets, as Pakistan struggled to build meaningful partnerships. England then made Pakistan pay for their early collapse.
England build commanding first-innings lead
England responded with 453, establishing a substantial advantage and putting themselves firmly in control of the Test. Their batting effort was built around several valuable contributions rather than one dominant century.
Harry Brook led the scoring with 75, while Jamie Smith chipped in with 69 and Dan Lawrence added 65. Emilio Gay also made a useful 60, with Robinson contributing an unbeaten-looking? 50 to ensure England pushed well beyond Pakistan’s first-innings total.
Razaullah endured a difficult outing despite making an impact with the ball, finishing with four wickets for 148 runs. His wickets gave Pakistan some encouragement, but England’s 320-run first-innings lead left the visitors facing a huge challenge.
Pakistan fight back but fall short
Pakistan showed tremendous character in their second innings, producing a vastly improved batting display and scoring 449 all out. Former captain Shan Masood narrowly missed out on a century, compiling an excellent 95, while Babar Azam added 76 to keep the innings together. Razaullah followed his bowling contribution with a valuable 81, and Azan Awais scored a determined 59.
Their second-innings resistance meant England were set 130 for victory, giving Pakistan a chance to put pressure on the hosts despite their first-innings collapse. Gus Atkinson was England’s leading wicket-taker in the innings, claiming 3/109 as Pakistan eventually ran out of batting resources.

Joe Root and Jordon Cox silence Pakistan’s hopes
Pakistan’s hopes of forcing a dramatic turnaround appeared alive when Mohammad Abbas dismissed Ben Duckett with the first ball of England’s chase. Emilio Gay then fell lbw in the same over, leaving England precariously placed at 2/2.
However, Root and Cox refused to panic. Root survived a major scare when Mohammad Ali appeared to bowl him, only for the delivery to be ruled a no-ball. The England veteran immediately responded with a boundary, while Cox settled into his innings at the other end.
Root eventually reached an unbeaten 62, while Cox remained not out on 59 as England completed the chase without further damage. The victory sealed a 3-0 series whitewash, capping a dominant campaign for England and leaving Pakistan to reflect on a Test series in which they showed flashes of resilience but ultimately could not match the hosts’ consistency.
