At the other end, Ishan Kishan provided the perfect foil during a match-defining 121-run stand for the second wicket. Having recently led his side from the front in domestic cricket with heavy runs in the Duleep Trophy, Kishan carried that confidence straight into the international arena. There was zero complacency in his approach despite his recent silverware.
Kishan struck a calculated 42 off 33 balls, hitting five boundaries and a six. His calm rotation of strike ensured Abhishek retained momentum while completely denying Afghanistan any room to build pressure after Sanju Samson’s early departure. By the time Mohammad Nabi removed both set batters in quick succession, the match was already dead and buried, leaving the remaining formalities easily handled.
Arshdeep Singh Silences Doubters with Pinpoint Spell
While the batters grabbed the headlines, India’s dominant evening was set up by a sharp bowling display led by Arshdeep Singh. The left-arm seamer had faced questions about his economy rate in recent outings, but he delivered a commanding response with the white ball. Backed by an aggressive opening burst from the returning Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep dismantled Afghanistan’s middle order.
Arshdeep finished with exemplary figures of 3 for 19 across his four overs, consistently hitting hard lengths and utilizing changes of pace to perfection. His incisive bowling reduced Afghanistan to a perilous 43 for 5 inside seven overs, completely shutting down their top-order ambitions.
Omarzai and Nabi Show Grit in Afghanistan’s Collapse
Had it not been for a resilient counter-punch from Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi, Afghanistan would have struggled to cross the three-figure mark. The duo staged an 83-run partnership to pull their side out of total embarrassment. Omarzai played a fighting knock of 64 not out from 44 balls, punishing loose deliveries with four boundaries and four sixes, while Nabi contributed a measured 33.
Their gritty stand lifted Afghanistan to a respectable 156 for 8, but it proved nowhere near sufficient against an Indian lineup firing on all cylinders.
