Sanjiv Goenka admits communication issues, hints at LSG coaching change ahead of IPL 2027

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are likely to make changes in their coaching setup after a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign. The franchise finished at the bottom of the table, and owner Sanjiv Goenka has admitted that the team needs to seriously review what went wrong.

Goenka feels foreign coaches may struggle to connect with Indian players because of the language barrier in the IPL. With Lucknow Super Giants already having a large group of overseas coaches and support staff, he hinted that the franchise could now look at a big reset. Earlier this year, Sanjiv Goenka reveals his biggest regret over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Lucknow Super Giants set for major coaching shake-up?

The Lucknow Super Giants currently have a star-studded coaching team. Australian legend Justin Langer is the head coach, while Tom Moody works as the global director of cricket. South Africa’s Lance Klusener is the assistant coach, and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson is the mentor.

However, having so many voices has also created concerns. Last season, former captain Rishabh Pant had spoken about the difficulty of dealing with too many voices around the team. Pant has since been traded away from the franchise, rejoining Delhi Capitals a few months back.

Sanjiv Goenka reveals big review plan after IPL 2026 disaster

Goenka has revealed that LSG has not yet completed their review of the 2026 season. The franchise will first wait for The Hundred to finish before sitting down with the coaching staff. The LSG team owner wants to understand why the side failed despite having strong players and coaches.

The industrialist pointed out that LSG’s batting worked well last season while the bowling failed. This year, the bowling improved, but the batting struggled. That was a clear hint that something needs to be reset, as pointed out by the LSG owner. He said that the franchise will discuss the situation with Moody, Williamson, and Langer before taking the final call.

Justin Langer and his team in danger ahead of IPL 2027

Sanjiv Goenka said on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube podcast: “Eventually, a team might look very good on paper. “If it doesn’t click, the team doesn’t do well. If an average team on paper clicks, it does very well. Honestly, we haven’t sat down with the coaches yet. A review is yet to be done. The Hundred will finish soon; after that, we will do it.”

He further said, “Then we will conclude what happened, why it happened, and what mistakes we shouldn’t repeat. But our batting is also good. Bowling is also good. Last year, our batting clicked and bowling flopped. This year, our bowling clicked and batting flopped.

So something needs to be reset. What exactly needs to be done? We have Tom Moody, Kane Williamson, and Justin Langer. We need to talk to them. We need to do a review and then come to a decision on what to do.” Amid this, Sanjiv Goenka breaks silence on Rishabh Pant after Delhi Capitals trade.

Sanjiv Goenka admits LSG’s language problem, hits at coaching shake-up

Goenka has also identified communication as one of the biggest lessons from the season. He believes overseas coaches understand the technical side of cricket but may not always understand Indian players beyond the cricketing language.

This could become a key factor in LSG’s next decision when it comes to choosing the coaches. The franchise may now look for a setup that can connect with Indian players more effectively and reduce the communication gap inside the dressing room.

Goenka signed off by saying, “It does cause issues… This is one of my learnings: international coaches are not able to communicate effectively with our Indian kids. They understand the cricketing language, but they don’t understand what goes beyond that. So, this is something that might need to be corrected moving forward.”
