Clash during bank election: CPI(M) leader held in Kozhikode

A special investigation team (SIT) on Wednesday (September 16, 2026) arrested M. Gireesh, a district secretariat member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], in connection with violence during the Chevayur bank election in November 2024.

The arrest relates to a case in which a native of Mukkom sustained serious injuries during a clash on November 16, 2024. CPI(M) branch member C.P. Jaleel was also arrested in connection with the case.

The accused have been booked under non-bailable provisions, including attempt to murder and assault involving weapons, according to the police.

The clash reportedly involved Congress worker Sirajudheen, who suffered serious injuries. Following the incident, Congress leaders lodged a complaint with the police, leading to the investigation.

The case is being investigated by the SIT constituted by the Home department. Crime Branch Superintendent of Police K. Vikraman is the team leader.

Meanwhile, CPI(M) district secretary M. Mehboob claimed that the above-mentioned case had been put on hold earlier after an investigation revealed that some of the allegations were factually incorrect. He said the claim that Kozhikode MP M.K. Raghavan was attacked during the bank election was not true.

Mr. Mehboob alleged that the hurried arrest of Mr. Gireesh under non-bailable provisions was politically motivated and said that the party would fight it legally. However, Kozhikode District Congress Committee president and Koyilandy MLA K. Praveenkumar welcomed the arrest.
