On the whole, DAAYRA rests on an intriguing premise and strong performances by Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran. However, the stretched second half and, more importantly, the absence of a satisfying climax heavily dilute the overall impact. At the box office, the buzz around the film is limited and it will need strong word of mouth from the multiplex audience to make a mark.

And if you want your audience to wrestle with a difficult moral question, you have to make them genuinely uncomfortable first. But, Daayra doesn’t quite get there.

Overall, Daayra raises a question far more uncomfortable than the one it begins with: when the system itself becomes part of the story, where does justice really begin? The film has enough moral complexity to make that question linger, even if its trajectory and pace blunt some of its impact. By the time the end credits roll, you are left with a film that has substance and clearly wants to provoke thought, but could have used a little more fire to truly leave a mark.And perhaps that is where the Sunny Deol comparison becomes relevant. “Tareekh pe tareekh” worked because the frustration of waiting for justice was provoking. Daayra takes a quieter route.
