Gautam Gambhir has sympathy for Shubman Gill. Check Why?

By Siddhant Tripathi2 min read

Indian cricket has entered a transitional phase where scrutiny follows every result, but head coach Gautam Gambhir has made his stance crystal clear. Amid mounting questions over India’s recent fortunes in Test and One-Day International formats, Gambhir has mounted a staunch defense of Shubman Gill, insisting that judging the young leader prematurely ignores a glaring handicap: the unavailability of a settled playing group.

Gautam Gambhir Backs Shubman Gill Over Team Absences

Gill took over significant leadership responsibilities with expectations running high. Yet, across his early assignments, the right-hander has seldom walked out with India’s best possible eleven on the park. Gambhir termed the situation unfair to a newly appointed captain, emphasizing that no tactical blueprint can function smoothly when core contributors continually rotate out of action.

The coach’s frustration stems from a relentless cycle of physical setbacks within the dressing room. In almost every series, India have had to cope with one or two key personnel breaking down, forcing last-minute adjustments. High-profile match-winners such as Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya have experienced intermittent lay-offs, while several seamers and all-rounders have spent extended periods recuperating. According to Gambhir, expecting seamless execution from an evolving skipper without his primary match-winners amounts to an injustice.

Fitness Scrutiny Shifts Toward the Centre of Excellence

Gambhir’s observations naturally cast an indirect spotlight on player conditioning and injury rehabilitation. The BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru has faced growing internal and public scrutiny as recurring breakdowns disrupt bilateral preparations. For a team building toward premier long-format contests and the 2027 ODI World Cup, continuity remains paramount. If frontline players struggle to sustain full fitness across consecutive assignments, tactical development inevitably stalls.

Gambhir remains fully convinced of Gill’s tactical acumen and leadership upside. In the coach’s view, the cricketing community will only witness the true caliber of Gill’s captaincy once he is handed a stable, full-strength squad on a consistent basis. Until India’s premier assets achieve regular fitness, the management believes the focus must rest on rectifying systemic fitness issues rather than pointing fingers at the captain.
