Nathan Ellis and Joel Davies Ruled Out of Final ODI

Australia have suffered another double blow on their white-ball tour of Africa. Fast bowler Nathan Ellis and young spin-bowling all-rounder Joel Davies have both been ruled out of the third and final One-Day International against South Africa. The setback leaves the touring side heavily depleted as they look to salvage some pride in the series finale.

South Africa have already secured the three-match series by winning the first two matches. With injuries continuing to pile up, Australia face a tough challenge to avoid a clean sweep in Potchefstroom.

Why Nathan Ellis and Joel Davies Are Sidelined

Nathan Ellis has arguably been Australia’s most reliable limited-overs bowler across the recent African tour. He played a starring role in the preceding series against Zimbabwe and started strongly in South Africa, picking up three wickets in the opening ODI. He carried that rhythm into the second match in Johannesburg, conceding just 22 runs in his first four overs while keeping things tight.

However, Ellis suffered a side strain during that spell and had to leave the field. He did not bowl again in the match. The moment he walked off, Australia lost their grip on the game. Without Ellis to control the run rate, the bowling attack leaked runs freely in the second half of the innings. South Africa took full advantage and piled on a match-winning total.

Joel Davies was also struck down during the same match. The promising left-arm spinner had not played a single match on tour, but he came on as a substitute fielder in Johannesburg. While doing his fielding duties, Davies suffered a hamstring strain that has now ended his tour early.

Mounting Injury Woes on Australia’s Tour

The Australian team management has decided not to call up any replacements for either player. This decision stretches the squad thin for the final match. The team was already managing an injury list that began in Zimbabwe, where tall fast bowler Billy Stanlake was ruled out after suffering a similar side strain.

Losing Ellis is particularly costly for Australia’s bowling balance. His ability to hit the pitch hard, bowl difficult lines, and execute yorkers at the death has made him a vital part of the white-ball setup. His absence removes both a wicket-taker and a bowler who can keep scoring rates down under pressure.

Bowling Changes and the Battle for Pride

With an unassailable 2-0 lead, South Africa hold all the momentum heading into the third ODI. For Australia, the game is all about protecting their reputation and finishing the series on a positive note.

Australia will have to reshuffle their bowling attack once again. Captain Pat Cummins was rested for the second ODI and is expected to return to the playing eleven. Left-arm strike bowler Mitchell Starc is also likely to feature. In turn, Josh Hazlewood could be given a rest after playing back-to-back games, leaving Xavier Bartlett to shoulder a bigger role.

Even with Cummins and Starc returning, the sudden loss of Ellis weakens Australia’s options in the middle and death overs. If the visitors are to bounce back and stop an aggressive South African batting line-up, their remaining bowlers must step up and deliver an error-free performance.
