Chennai Super Kings are continuing to reshape their coaching setup, with former India pacer Mohit Sharma set to join CSK coaching setup
The development comes shortly after the five-time IPL champions appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach following the end of Stephen Fleming’s long association with the franchise.
Mohit’s name was recommended by Zaheer, and the CSK management has backed the appointment. For Mohit, it is also a homecoming to the franchise where his IPL career first took off in 2013.
Mohit Sharma Set to Join CSK as Bowling Coach
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that Mohit is expected to join the franchise’s coaching staff and revealed that the recommendation came directly from Zaheer Khan.
Mohit already understands the CSK environment well after representing the franchise across four IPL seasons during his playing career.
He first played for Chennai between 2013 and 2015 before returning for another stint in 2019.
His familiarity with the franchise, combined with more than a decade of IPL experience as a fast bowler, gives CSK another experienced Indian voice in their new-look support staff.
Zaheer Khan and Mohit Sharma to Lead CSK’s Bowling Plans
The appointments of Zaheer and Mohit indicate an important change in CSK’s coaching structure.
Zaheer brings vast international and IPL experience, while Mohit built his career around swing bowling, slower deliveries, cutters and death-over variations.
Those skills became particularly important during the later stages of Mohit’s IPL career. Even after disappearing from regular IPL action, he rebuilt his game and returned with Gujarat Titans as an effective death bowler.
Working together, Zaheer and Mohit will now be responsible for shaping CSK’s bowling plans and developing the franchise’s pace attack.

Mohit Sharma Started His IPL Career With CSK in 2013
Mohit’s connection with Chennai Super Kings goes back to the beginning of his IPL career.
CSK picked him for the 2013 season, and he quickly became an important part of their pace attack. His ability to swing the new ball and use changes of pace made him highly effective under MS Dhoni.
His biggest season in yellow came in IPL 2014, when he finished with 23 wickets and won the Purple Cap.
Mohit remained with Chennai in 2015 before the franchise’s two-year suspension forced him to move elsewhere.
From Gujarat Titans Net Bowler to IPL Comeback
Mohit joined the Gujarat Titans setup as a net bowler in 2022.
Instead of treating it as a step backwards, he used the opportunity to work on his bowling and earn another chance at the highest level.
Gujarat eventually added him to their playing squad for IPL 2023.
Mohit made an immediate impact.
His slower balls, control and experience in pressure situations became a major weapon for Gujarat Titans. One of his best performances came against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2, when he took an extraordinary 5 wickets for 10 runs to help GT reach the IPL final.
The comeback was particularly impressive considering he had gone two seasons without playing an IPL match.
Strong Performances for Gujarat Titans
Mohit remained with Gujarat Titans for IPL 2024 as well.
Against Chennai Super Kings that season, he picked up 3/31, dismissing Daryl Mitchell, Moeen Ali and Shivam Dube as Gujarat defeated CSK by 35 runs.
By this stage of his career, Mohit had developed into a bowler who relied heavily on variations, cutters and changes of pace rather than outright speed.
That experience could now be particularly valuable in his new role as CSK bowling coach.
From CSK Player to CSK Bowling Coach
There is a clear full-circle element to Mohit Sharma’s appointment.
2013: Mohit began his IPL career with Chennai Super Kings.
2026: He is set to return to the franchise as their bowling coach.
More than a decade of experience in the IPL has seen him bowl with the new ball, operate through the middle overs and handle high-pressure death overs.
Now, instead of executing those plans himself, he will be responsible for helping CSK’s bowlers prepare and execute them.
With Zaheer Khan as head coach and Mohit Sharma working with the bowling unit, Chennai Super Kings are building a noticeably different coaching structure for the next phase of the franchise.
