Security concerns briefly disrupted Australia’s top office on 24th February. A bomb threat led to the evacuation of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s official residence in Canberra.
Police responded late Tuesday to what they described as an “alleged security incident.” A thorough search of the property found nothing suspicious, and authorities confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public. Albanese returned to the residence a few hours later.
The threat was reportedly linked to emails sent to representatives of Shen Yun, a classical Chinese dance troupe scheduled to perform in Australia this month. The emails, originally written in Chinese, claimed explosives had been placed around the prime minister’s residence. Moreover, they warned they would be detonated if the performances went ahead.
One of the messages threatened that the residence would be destroyed if the group proceeded. The troupe said it informed national security and law enforcement authorities and thanked officials for ensuring public safety.
Police have not disclosed the source of the threat and said there is no current risk.
Speaking in Melbourne on Wednesday, Albanese urged people to “turn the heat down.” He added that such incidents are a reminder not to take security for granted. Earlier in the day, he also thanked police for their work in a social media post from The Lodge.
