Australian Cricket Becoming Pakistan? Shocking Test Selection Raises Questions

Australian cricket is starting to surprise everyone with some of its recent decisions. In fact, the unpredictability is beginning to remind us of Pakistan cricket, where sometimes you simply cannot predict what decision will come next.

Australia’s performances have also not been convincing recently, but more surprising are some of the decisions being taken around the team.

The latest one is the Australian Test selection of Nic Maddinson for the upcoming series against South Africa. Maddinson has been added to the squad despite not playing any first-class cricket last season.

And this is where the selection becomes difficult to understand.

Strange Decisions Continue in Australian Cricket

We already saw another surprising decision during the recent ODI series against South Africa.

Pat Cummins was named captain in Australia’s ODI squad for the series, but Mitchell Marsh captained the side in the third ODI. For a captain who is expected to lead Australia in the World Cup, every match as captain gives him more experience and another opportunity to learn under pressure.

Yet Australia went in a different direction.

But even that looks less surprising when compared with their latest Test squad decision.

Australia have now added Sam Harper and Nic Maddinson to their squad for the South Africa Tests. Harper’s inclusion is understandable. He recently scored a century for Australia A and has been performing well. Maddinson’s selection, however, raises much bigger questions.

Cricket Australia says Harper has been brought in as wicketkeeping cover for the injured Josh Inglis, while Maddinson provides flexibility in the batting order.

Nic Maddinson Selected Despite No First-Class Cricket Last Season

Maddinson’s story deserves respect. He underwent treatment for testicular cancer in 2025 and has since returned to cricket.

But selection for Australia’s Test team should ultimately be judged on red-ball cricket.

And this is where the decision becomes surprising.

Maddinson did not play a single first-class match during the entire 2025-26 season. Cricket Australia’s own season preview confirms that he missed the whole Sheffield Shield campaign after overcoming cancer.

Now Australia have brought him directly into their Test squad.

Yes, Maddinson has recently played a very good innings. On September 25, he smashed a century for New South Wales against Victoria in the One-Day Cup. It was his seventh List A hundred and his first in the format since 2017.

But that was a List A match, not first-class cricket.

So essentially, one excellent white-ball innings has been followed by a Test squad call-up despite Maddinson having no first-class cricket behind him from last season.

What About Players Performing in Red-Ball Cricket?

This is what makes the decision even harder to understand.

Australia have players competing in domestic first-class cricket, and several players were specifically selected for the Australia A four-day matches against India A.

That Australia A squad included players such as Sam Konstas, Nathan McSweeney, Peter Handscomb, Jason Sangha, Campbell Kellaway and Josh Philippe, among others.

Yet Australia have gone back to Maddinson.

If his previous international record had been outstanding, perhaps the decision would have been easier to understand. But that is not the case either.

Nic Maddinson’s International Record Raises More Questions

Maddinson has previously played three Tests for Australia.

His Test numbers are:

3 matches, 4 innings, 27 runs, average 6.75, highest score 22.

He has also represented Australia in six T20Is. His numbers there are:

6 matches, 4 innings, 45 runs, average 11.25, highest score 34.

So Australia are not recalling someone who previously dominated international cricket and is now being backed because of an outstanding Test record.

His previous international numbers were poor.

That makes the Australian Test selection even more difficult to understand: a player with a Test average of just 6.75, who did not play first-class cricket last season, has suddenly returned to the Test squad after one excellent List A century.

Is Australian Cricket Becoming Too Unpredictable?

Of course, Australia have injury concerns. Josh Inglis has a fractured finger, while Cameron Green suffered an abdominal strain during the third ODI. Cricket Australia has specifically said Maddinson provides flexibility throughout the batting order.

But the broader selection question still remains.

Australia have traditionally been a team where domestic performances, particularly Sheffield Shield performances, carried huge importance for Test selection.

That is why this decision feels so unusual.

Players have been performing in domestic cricket. Australia A have been playing four-day cricket. There are batters already getting red-ball opportunities. Yet Maddinson, without a first-class appearance last season, has suddenly been brought into the Test setup.

That is exactly why Australia’s recent decisions are starting to feel increasingly unpredictable.

Pakistan cricket has often been criticised for selections and captaincy decisions that appear to change suddenly. Looking at some of Australia’s recent calls, Australian cricket is beginning to create a similar kind of uncertainty.

The biggest question is simple: if current first-class performances are not enough to put a player ahead in the selection queue, what exactly is Australia’s criteria for Test selection?

Australia Test squad: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green, Sam Harper, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis (not for first test), Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nic Maddinson, Nathan Lyon, Michael Neser, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster
