India clinched the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket gold medal after beating Pakistan by 19 runs in a hard-fought final. India entered the contest as clear favourites, but Pakistan made them work much harder for the victory than many expected.
The win also extended India’s dominance over Pakistan in the format, marking their seventh consecutive T20I victory against them.
Pakistan, however, deserve credit for keeping the contest alive until the closing stages. They also had chances to put India under even greater pressure, but fielding lapses and missed opportunities hurt them. For India, the final was a reminder that even after scoring 211, they could not afford to relax against a side capable of fighting back.
Abhishek Sharma Dominates Pakistan Again
India won the toss and decided to bat first. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma gave the team an aggressive start.
Vaibhav looked dangerous but threw away his wicket while attempting a reverse shot and departed for 15. Abhishek, however, continued attacking the Pakistan bowlers.
The left-hander smashed 61 from just 28 balls, including three fours and seven sixes. Once again, he produced a big innings against Pakistan and ensured India made full use of the Powerplay.
But India suddenly started losing momentum.
Sanju Samson failed to make an impact, while Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer also could not produce substantial innings. After Abhishek’s dismissal, Pakistan’s spinners dragged themselves back into the contest and India’s brilliant start was in danger of being wasted.
Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube Change the Match
This was where Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube produced arguably the match-defining partnership.
Tilak has already shown his ability to handle pressure in a final against Pakistan, and he delivered once again when India needed him most.
He remained unbeaten on 51 from only 22 balls, hitting three fours and four sixes. Dube provided excellent support with 27 from 15 deliveries.
Their late assault completely changed India’s innings. India scored 69 runs in the final four overs and finished with a massive 211/6.
Without that partnership, India could easily have ended somewhere around the 180-run mark after losing momentum in the middle overs. Instead, Tilak and Dube gave the bowlers a much stronger total to defend.
Hasan Nawaz Gives India a Reality Check
Pakistan did not get the ideal start to their chase. Sahibzada Farhan struggled for fluency, while India kept taking wickets.
But Hasan Nawaz refused to allow India to run away with the final.
He played a sensational lone hand and kept Pakistan in the contest almost until the very end. Hasan Nawaz smashed 96 runs off 51 balls, with five fours and seven sixes.
His innings turned what could have been a comfortable Indian victory into a genuine contest.
Pakistan eventually needed 44 runs from the final two overs. Jasprit Bumrah then delivered an excellent 19th over, leaving Pakistan with 33 to get from the last six balls.
Hasan continued fighting but was dismissed on the final delivery, missing out on a deserved century by just four runs. Pakistan finished 19 runs short.
His innings still gave India something to think about. Pakistan may have relied heavily on one batter, but that one innings was enough to keep a 212-run chase alive deep into the match.
Axar and Washington Impress With the Ball
The conditions did not offer much assistance to the pacers, but Bumrah still produced an important spell. He went wicketless but conceded only 33 runs from his four overs, including the crucial penultimate over when Pakistan needed a huge finish.
Axar Patel and Washington Sundar were particularly effective, picking up two wickets each. Shivam Dube also completed an excellent all-round performance by taking two wickets.
For Pakistan, Abrar Ahmed bowled a controlled spell and conceded only 29 runs from his four overs. Arafat Minhas also troubled India during the middle phase, although Pakistan surprisingly used him for only three overs.
In the end, India had enough runs on the board to survive Hasan Nawaz’s brilliant counterattack.
It was not the one-sided final many may have expected, and Pakistan made India fight for the medal. But when the pressure was highest, Abhishek Sharma provided the start, Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube delivered the finish, and India’s bowlers did enough to complete a 19-run victory.
India are Asian Games champions once again — and the gold medal belongs to them.
