Some things in cricket simply do not change. Years have passed, Yuvraj Singh has retired from international cricket, and the names around him are different, but put Australia in front of him and something seems to click.
Yuvraj once again produced a brilliant knock against an Australian side as India Champions defeated Australia Champions by 46 runs in their opening match of the World Championship of Legends 2026.
The former India star smashed 71 runs from just 44 balls and once again reminded fans why Australia has always brought out some of the best cricket of his career.
Yuvraj Singh Punishes Australia Once Again
India Champions did not have everything their own way after being asked to bat first. Naman Ojha made 31 from 26 balls, but it was Yuvraj who gave the innings the push it needed.
The India Champions captain smashed 71 from 44 deliveries, hitting five fours and six sixes. Even years after leaving international cricket, the timing and power that made Yuvraj one of India’s most dangerous middle-order batters were visible again.
Yusuf Pathan provided valuable support with 37 from 20 balls before Rishi Dhawan produced a superb finish. Dhawan hammered an unbeaten 35 from only 12 deliveries at a strike rate of 291.67.
India eventually posted 196, giving their bowlers a strong total to defend.
What made Yuvraj’s performance even more impressive was the experience in Australia’s bowling attack. Nathan Coulter-Nile, Kane Richardson, Ben Hilfenhaus, Fawad Ahmed and Ben Laughlin were all part of the attack, while D’Arcy Short also bowled.
Yet Yuvraj once again found a way to dominate Australia.
Australia Has Seen This Version of Yuvraj Before
This was hardly the first time Yuvraj had produced something special against Australia.
One of the most memorable examples came in the 2007 T20 World Cup semi-final. India were facing a powerful Australian team with a place in the final at stake.
Yuvraj walked in and smashed 70 from just 30 balls, including five fours and five sixes. India reached 188/5 and eventually defeated Australia by 15 runs, with Yuvraj named Player of the Match.
Four years later, he delivered on an even bigger stage.
India faced defending champions Australia in the quarter-final of the 2011 ODI World Cup. Chasing 261, India found themselves under pressure at 187/5. Yuvraj stayed unbeaten on 57 and guided India to a five-wicket victory.
That win ended Australia’s long reign as world champions and took India one step closer to eventually lifting the 2011 World Cup.
Those performances are a major reason Yuvraj and Australia have such a memorable history. When India have needed him in important games against the Aussies, he has repeatedly produced big performances.
Retirement Hasn’t Changed the Story
That is what makes his latest 71 even more enjoyable for Indian fans.
Yuvraj retired from international cricket years ago, while the Australia Champions XI still contained several players with relatively recent top-level experience.
D’Arcy Short and Usman Khawaja were among the major names in the Australian batting line-up, while Coulter-Nile, Richardson, Hilfenhaus and Fawad Ahmed gave their bowling attack plenty of experience.
On paper, Australia had enough quality to make the contest difficult. On the field, however, Yuvraj once again became the central figure in an Indian win over Australia.
Australia did fight back during the chase, particularly through D’Arcy Short, but India Champions’ bowlers ensured Yuvraj’s innings did not go to waste.
The result was another convincing Indian victory and another chapter in Yuvraj Singh’s remarkable history against Australia.
From 70 off 30 in the 2007 T20 World Cup semi-final to an unbeaten 57 in the 2011 World Cup quarter-final and now 71 off 44 for India Champions, the years may have changed, but Yuvraj’s habit of producing something special against Australia remains.
Perhaps there really is something about Australia that brings out the best in Yuvraj Singh.
