The high-voltage men’s cricket gold medal clash between India and Pakistan at the Asian Games delivered edge-of-the-seat drama, but an unsavoury on-field exchange quickly stole the spotlight for the wrong reasons. Pakistan all-rounder Saim Ayub sparked fierce backlash after directing a provocative send-off towards India’s 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
The controversial baby cradle send-off
The flashpoint occurred during the third over of India’s innings. The teenage Indian opener had started in blistering fashion, racing to 15 off just nine deliveries with two clean sixes. Ayub managed to cut the youngster’s stay short when Suryavanshi attempted a reverse sweep that resulted in an edge.
Rather than celebrating with his teammates in a standard fashion, Ayub turned toward the dismissed batter and mimicked rocking a baby cradle. The overt gesture, seemingly mocking Suryavanshi’s tender age, immediately drew sharp criticism from observers, fans, and cricket purists alike.

Why Shoaib Akhtar slams Saim Ayub over Asian Games antics
Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar pulled no punches while calling out Saim Ayub’s behaviour. Akhtar expressed his frustration over the celebration and questioned what Ayub was trying to prove by mocking Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
Akhtar said, “Instead of making documentaries after losing matches, focus on playing proper cricket. What was Saim Ayub trying to show with that celebration? That kid is playing better than your entire team.”
Akhtar felt that Pakistan players should focus more on their cricket rather than such celebrations after defeats. He also praised Suryavanshi, pointing out the exceptional talent the 15-year-old has already shown. According to Akhtar, mocking a young player who is performing at such a high level does not look good, especially when Pakistan themselves need to improve their performances.
Performance over theatrics on the big stage
The controversial gesture provided India with added motivation rather than rattling their camp. Abhishek Sharma countered aggressively, powering India to a formidable 211 for 6 in their 20 overs. Despite a spirited resistance from Hasan Nawaz, who fought valiantly with a 96-run knock, Pakistan fell short as India sealed a 19-run victory to clinch the gold medal.
The outcome served as a stern reminder of Akhtar’s core message: on-field gestures mean very little when games are lost, and true sporting greatness lies in clinical execution rather than unprovoked drama.
