Mohit Sharma has opened up about the impact MS Dhoni had on his career, praising the former India captain for his ability to read situations and get the best out of his players. Sharma was fortunate to spend a major part of his India career under Dhoni and also shared the dressing room with him at Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
The former pacer believes Dhoni’s leadership was built around understanding what each player could offer rather than simply following a fixed approach. Sharma also credited the culture created at CSK for helping the franchise maintain its success over the years.
Mohit Sharma praises MS Dhoni’s exceptional situational awareness
Sharma explained that Dhoni’s understanding of players was one of his biggest strengths and revealed how the former captain would use players according to their abilities. While Sharma did not want to compare Dhoni with other captains, he highlighted the former India skipper’s ability to quickly assess what was happening on the field and find different solutions to a problem.
“He knows your strengths and weaknesses and accordingly he uses you. I don’t want to compare captains, but his situational awareness is very acute. He understands the situation very quickly and he knows that there can be multiple solutions to a problem,” Sharma said.
That ability to adapt according to the circumstances helped Dhoni make effective decisions while giving his players clarity about their roles.
CSK’s dressing-room culture played a key role in their success
Sharma also spoke about the environment at CSK and the importance of building a strong dressing room. He credited the franchise’s management and coaching setup, including head coach Stephen Fleming, for creating an atmosphere where players could focus on their roles. According to Sharma, CSK’s approach starts with creating unity within the squad before looking at results on the field.
“The first thing is to win the dressing room. If you win the dressing room, then you have already won half the battle,” Sharma said.
Dhoni’s leadership has been central to both India and CSK’s success. He led India to the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy titles, while also becoming one of the most successful captains in franchise cricket. For Sharma, however, Dhoni’s influence goes beyond the trophies, with his ability to understand players and situations making him such an important figure in his career.
