WATCH: Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud takes a hat-trick against Afghanistan in the One-off Test

Hasan Mahmud created history on Sunday, October 11, by becoming the first Bangladesh pacer to claim a hat-trick in Test cricket. The right-arm quick achieved the remarkable feat against Afghanistan during the third day of the one-off Test at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Hasan’s sensational three-ball burst dismantled Afghanistan’s lower middle order and gave Bangladesh a significant advantage in the contest. His achievement also placed him among a select group of Bangladeshi bowlers to have taken a hat-trick in the longest format.

The 26-year-old became only the third Bangladesh bowler to achieve the milestone, following Alok Kapali and Sohag Gazi. While Kapali recorded the country’s first Test hat-trick against Pakistan in 2003, Gazi accomplished the feat against New Zealand in 2013. Hasan’s performance added another memorable chapter to Bangladesh’s Test cricket history.

Hasan Mahmud’s historic Test hat-trick against Afghanistan

Afghanistan were 211/4 at the end of the second day’s play while chasing Bangladesh’s first-innings total of 346. The hosts appeared capable of building a strong response, with captain Rahmat Shah anchoring the innings.

However, Bangladesh struck early on the third morning when fellow fast bowler Ebadot Hossain dismissed wicketkeeper-batter Ikram Alikhil for 32.

Hasan then took centre stage, producing a remarkable over that changed the complexion of the innings.

His first victim was Ismat Alam, who was bowled for one after failing to deal with a back-of-a-length delivery that stayed unexpectedly low. The ball slipped beneath the batter’s bat and crashed into the stumps.

Hasan followed that breakthrough by dismissing Qais Ahmad for a duck. The Afghanistan batter attempted to play a delivery outside off stump but edged it behind, where wicketkeeper Litton Das completed an excellent diving catch.

With two wickets in consecutive deliveries, Hasan had an opportunity to make history.

Zia-ur-Rehman walked out to face the hat-trick ball, knowing that Hasan was one delivery away from a landmark achievement.

The left-handed batter attempted to work the ball towards the leg side but missed it and was struck on the pads. The on-field umpire initially rejected Bangladesh’s appeal, threatening to deny Hasan the hat-trick.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto decided to review the decision after consulting his teammates.

The replay showed no contact with the bat, while ball-tracking confirmed that the delivery would have hit the stumps. The decision was overturned, and Zia was given out leg before wicket.

Hasan completed his historic hat-trick, sparking celebrations among his teammates.

Hasan’s performance was particularly significant because it demonstrated the growing influence of Bangladesh’s pace attack in Test cricket. The country has traditionally relied heavily on spin bowling, but its fast bowlers have increasingly delivered important performances in challenging conditions.

Bangladesh eventually bowled out Afghanistan for 240, securing a commanding 106-run first-innings lead. Hasan led the attack with an impressive five-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 5/55, while his pace-bowling partner Ebadot Hossain provided excellent support with 4/56. Their combined effort dismantled Afghanistan’s batting lineup and put Bangladesh in a strong position in the Abu Dhabi Test.
