A dispute over a seat reserved for senior citizens inside a Delhi Metro train escalated into a physical altercation, following which a 48-year-old man collapsed at a station and died.

The Delhi Metro Police have arrested a 65-year-old former IAS officer and his 36-year-old son in connection with the death.

The accused, Sanjay Pratap Singh, 65, and his son, Sidharth Singh, 36, both residents of Noida, Uttar Pradesh, have been arrested under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). They have been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

Mr. Singh, a 1984-batch IAS officer, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in December 2015 in an alleged bribery case. He was accused of demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹2.2 lakh from the owner of a manpower agency that supplied security guards and other staff to the Delhi government’s Department for Welfare of SC, ST and Minorities, where he was then serving as Principal Secretary.

The deceased, Pawan Sharma, was travelling with his mother, Durga Devi, around 5.47 p.m. on October 8 when the incident occurred, according to the police.

During the preliminary enquiry, the police found that Mr. Sharma and his mother were travelling towards Yamuna Vihar and were seated on seats designated for senior citizens. The two accused boarded the train at Mandi House Metro station, following which a dispute broke out over the seats.

The disagreement subsequently escalated into a physical altercation and Sharma was allegedly slapped and pushed.

The situation took a dramatic turn when the train reached Supreme Court Metro station. Mr. Sharma reportedly became unconscious on the station’s platform and was taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital along with his mother. He was declared brought dead at the hospital.

The Supreme Court Metro police station received information and reached the hospital only to find that Mr. Sharma had already been declared dead.

Based on the statement of Mr. Sharma’s mother, the police registered an FIR on October 9.

Further investigation into the case is underway.
