Australian cricket witnessed a spectacular batting performance as Sam Konstas produced an unbeaten 151 for New South Wales against Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield 2026-27 season. The 21-year-old opener reached his first century of the domestic season in the second innings of the round two encounter at the WACA Ground on Wednesday, October 21.
His aggressive knock helped NSW set a target of 364 runs and put them in a commanding position heading into the final day. The performance also came at a crucial time for Konstas, who is looking to earn another opportunity in the Australian Test side.
Sam Konstas lights up WACA with explosive century
Konstas had already made a valuable contribution in the first innings, scoring 71 off 142 deliveries as NSW declared at 440/6. Kurtis Patterson’s unbeaten century and Ollie Davies’ half-century also helped the visitors post a formidable total. WA responded with 339 runs, giving NSW a first-innings lead of 101.
The opener then shifted gears in the second innings, displaying an attacking approach that put the opposition bowlers under pressure. He reached his century off 136 balls before accelerating further to finish unbeaten on 151 from 167 deliveries. His innings included 15 boundaries and four sixes, with one of the highlights being a massive hit into the Lily Marsh Stand off spinner Corey Rocchiccioli.
NSW declared at 262/5 after 52 overs, setting WA a target of 364. The hosts struggled in their chase and finished Day 3 at 30/3, with Ben Dwarshuis claiming two wickets and Jack Edwards taking one.
Century puts Konstas back in Test recall discussions
Konstas’ performance attracted further attention because national selector Tony Dodemaide was present at the WACA to watch the match. The young opener later admitted that he had not realised the selector was in attendance while he was batting. The century represents a timely statement from Konstas, who made his Test debut against India in December 2024 and impressed with an aggressive 60 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. However, he was dropped from the Australian Test side in 2025 following a difficult run of scores.
With uncertainty surrounding Australia’s top-order options, the 21-year-old has given the selectors another reason to consider his case. His first-innings 71 followed by an unbeaten 151 also demonstrated his ability to build an innings and accelerate when required. The knock has reignited discussions about his international future, with Konstas making the most of his opportunity in domestic cricket. His performance against WA could prove important as he looks to work his way back into Australia’s Test plans.

Marcus and Maddison have to go. Enough is enough. I’d be bringing in Sam Konstas for the Aussie summer and telling him he is in for the whole summer. Can’t be worse than Maddison
