Indian cricket fans were shocked to see Kumar Kushagra added to India’s T20I squad against New Zealand as backup for Ishan Kishan. Fans are now questioning how he earned selection ahead of Prabhsimran Singh, Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel without having proved himself in the IPL.
Prabhsimran had already earned a call-up for the Zimbabwe series. Pant has international experience, while Jurel has impressed in the IPL and domestic cricket. Naturally, Kushagra’s sudden inclusion has raised questions about India’s wicketkeeping pecking order.
Ishan Kishan’s Injury Creates the Need for Cover
Kishan suffered an injury during the first T20I against New Zealand and has been ruled out of the second match. With his return uncertain, India have added Kushagra as a precaution.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is a strong contender to take Kishan’s place in the playing XI. Kushagra’s inclusion serves a different purpose: giving the squad an extra wicketkeeper-batter in case another injury leaves India short of options.
Is Kumar Kushagra Ahead of Prabhsimran, Pant and Jurel on the Selectors’ Radar?
No. This call-up does not mean Kushagra has overtaken Prabhsimran, Pant or Jurel in India’s T20I plans.
The confusion comes from treating an emergency backup addition as a decision about the next first-choice wicketkeeper. Those are different situations. Kushagra has been brought in to meet an immediate requirement ahead of the second T20I.
The Main Reason Behind Kumar Kushagra Selection
The reason is straightforward: Kushagra was already in New Zealand and available to join the squad immediately.
He was part of the India A setup in New Zealand, so India could bring him into the senior squad at short notice. He keeps wickets, provides batting cover and can help as a substitute fielder when required.
With Kishan unavailable, the management wanted another player ready in case of further injury. Kushagra’s presence in the country made him the practical option. Had the matches been played in India, the selectors would have had easier access to other wicketkeepers.
The Jharkhand batter has plenty of talent and has also earned selection for the final two ODIs against New Zealand. But his T20 credentials still need strengthening, particularly through IPL performances. His ODI opportunity and this emergency T20I call-up should not be combined to declare that he has jumped ahead of established contenders in the shortest format.
