England stars get ECB approval to prioritize IPL over Pakistan series

England’s centrally contracted players are set to receive permission to remain in India for their Indian Premier League (IPL) commitments rather than return early for the five-match ODI series against Pakistan in May 2027.

The IPL 2027 window is expected to run from March 10 to May 15, as per reports. However, uncertainty remains over whether the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will bring the tournament forward slightly.

Pakistan tour of England 2027 Schedule

England are scheduled to host Pakistan for five ODIs between May 15 and May 26, 2027. The opening match will take place in Southampton on May 15, followed by the second ODI in Manchester on May 19.

The third ODI is scheduled for Leeds on May 21, while Chester-le-Street will host the fourth match on May 23. The series will conclude with the fifth ODI in Cardiff on May 26.

Timing of the series presents a potential scheduling challenge for English players involved in the IPL. If the tournament continues until May 15, the overlap could make it difficult for some players to join the national side at the start of the Pakistan series.

England stars won’t be recalled from IPL for Pakistan ODIs in 2027

Jos Buttler’s situation highlights the possible impact of the scheduling decision. The England star is targeting a return to competitive cricket after an injury rehabilitation period, with his recovery timeline expected to influence his availability for international cricket.

He is targeting a comeback during the SA20 before preparing for another IPL season. Gujarat Titans are expected to consider retaining him ahead of the November 15 retention deadline.

Jos Buttler remains central to England’s white-ball plans, combining wicketkeeping duties with a middle-order batting role. To help him gain additional 50-over experience, the ECB is also expected to consider opportunities with the England Lions, potentially in fixtures against Australia A next summer.

Meanwhile, with the IPL potentially overlapping with England’s Pakistan assignment, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will allow players to fulfil their franchise commitments in India, as per Cricinfo.

The ECB’s reported approach means franchises will not necessarily have to release their England players early for the ODI assignment. Their availability will therefore depend on their IPL commitments and the eventual tournament schedule.

Key English players in IPL

Several England players are associated with IPL franchises. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell and Jordan Cox, while Gujarat Titans feature Buttler, Tom Banton and Luke Wood.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have Liam Livingstone, Brydon Carse and David Payne. Rajasthan Royals are associated with Jofra Archer and Sam Curran, whose availability remains dependent on his fitness. Mumbai Indians have Will Jacks, while Chennai Super Kings have Jamie Overton.

The potential overlap between the IPL and England’s home ODI series underlines the growing scheduling challenge facing international cricket. Final IPL dates and individual player availability will determine how much the franchise tournament affects England’s preparations to face Pakistan.
