Selected overseas players, especially from the nations of South Africa and the West Indies, who play a crucial role in several IPL franchises, might be joining the IPL teams later than initially hoped. This is due to the impending situation in the Middle East and their delayed returns to their home.
The IPL 2026 season has been announced, and the initial schedule for the game was revealed yesterday. The tournament begins on the 28th of March, with the defending champions RCB taking on the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The BCCI’s IPL governing committee has revealed the first 20 games of the campaign instead of the full schedule due to the State elections scheduled to be held during this time of the year in many of the states that officially host the IPL matches.

Overseas players return to India for the IPL delayed by the crisis in the Middle East
Overseas players, especially those from the nations of South Africa and the West Indies, were stuck in the subcontinent for a long time after they were knocked out of the ICC T20 World Cup. This was due to the warlike situation in the Middle East and the airbases being shut down.
As a result of these logistical and travelling challenges, the players’ return to their homes was delayed for a long time, and hence, these players may join their respective franchises in the IPL later than initially hoped.
In particular, the West Indies, who were eliminated before reaching the semi-finals, were stranded for over a week, while South African players had also complained against the ICC as they were stuck in the subcontinent, while England players managed to fly back immediately after the loss to India in the semis.
According to PTI, the franchises will have to request the overseas player to join the squad ahead of the season despite the unfortunate circumstances.
“There was a substantial delay in the departure of West Indies and South Africa players. It would be a tough task to get them back to India on time. Plus, the airfares have gone up substantially due to the war in West Asia,” a team official was quoted as saying to PTI (via News 18).
CSK confirm the return of Akeal Hosein and Dewald Brevis
The Chennai Super Kings CEO, Kasi Vishwanathan, has confirmed that two of their players, who were part of West Indies and South Africa’s T20 World Cup XI, Akeal Hosein and Dewald Brevis, respectively, will join the squad for the upcoming season on time.
“We are expecting no delays from their end,” the CEO told PTI.
Akeal Hosein, the West Indian left-arm spinner, was stranded in India after the Super 8 stage exit; however, he had made a post on his Instagram story, requesting football legend Cristiano Ronaldo to help them get out of the country.
Important players from South Africa and the West Indies in IPL 2026
Several players from the West Indies and South Africa playing XI who were part of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 will also be playing their role in the Indian Premier League. West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer will be seen in action for the Rajasthan Royals, while Sherfane Rutherford will be playing for the Mumbai Indians after being traded by the Gujarat Titans.
Gujarat Titans will, on the other hand, have much anticipation from the in-form all-rounder Jason Holder. Rovman Powell will be part of the KKR side, and Romario Shepherd will star for the defending champions, RCB.
On the other hand, South African captain Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton, Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Corbin Bosch shall all be playing the IPL for their respective franchises in the Indian Premier League.
