Veteran Team India cricketer Ajinkya Rahane is the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), but questions remain about his long-term future. If Rahane steps down in the upcoming Indian Premier League season, left-handed batter Rinku Singh could emerge as the front-runner to take over the team reins.
The Kolkata Knight Riders endured a disappointing campaign in the last edition. Despite winning their third championship title in 2024, the team finished eighth in the points table last year. The team managed only five victories in 14 matches during Ajinkya Rahane’s maiden season as the franchise captain.
Rinku Singh Front-Runner to Take Over if Captaincy Position Becomes Vacant
Rinku Singh could emerge as the front-runner to take over the captaincy if the position becomes vacant. Singh has played 59 matches for the Kolkata Knight Riders. He has scored 1,099 runs in 51 innings at an average of 30.52 and a strike rate of 145.17, including four fifties, with a best score of an unbeaten 67.

The management expects improvements during the 2026 season. Rinku understands the pressure that comes with representing the Knight Riders. If given the captaincy, he has the tactical mindset needed to help the team bounce back.
He has been a reliable match-winner for the franchise over multiple seasons. Rinku will return to competitive cricket when the team faces the Mumbai Indians on March 29. After the away game, the team will play three consecutive home matches at Eden Gardens.
Ajinkya Rahane Delivered Strong Batting Performances for KKR
Despite the overall struggles of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Ajinkya Rahane delivered impressive batting performances last year. He finished as the leading run-scorer for the franchise.
The right-handed batter scored 390 runs in 13 innings at an average of over 35 and a strike rate of nearly 148. Angkrish Raghuvanshi was the second-leading run-scorer for KKR, scoring 90 runs fewer than Rahane.
Ajinkya Rahane consistently dominated opposition bowlers during the mandatory powerplay field restrictions. He failed to convert his starts into big scores as he struggled against spin bowlers in the middle overs.
Rahane also looked impressive in home matches at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He averaged over 47 with a strike rate above 152 in six home innings. However, if Rahane decides to step down from captaincy to focus on his batting, the management may promote a new designated captain.
Kolkata Knight Riders Make Major Changes Ahead of New Season
The Kolkata Knight Riders have made several changes ahead of the new season. Abhishek Nayar has been appointed as the new head coach. He will work alongside assistant coach Shane Watson and bowling coach Tim Southee to improve overall player performances in the dressing room.
Legendary all-rounder Andre Russell has also returned to the Kolkata Knight Riders in a coaching capacity. Following his retirement from the league, he will join the management team as a designated power coach. He will focus on improving the boundary-hitting ability of the batting unit.
The franchise also executed aggressive strategies during the recent mega auction. The management released several notable players before acquiring Australian all-rounder Cameron Green for ₹25.20 crore.
Whether Ajinkya Rahane or Rinku Singh leads the squad, the Kolkata Knight Riders need players to deliver immediate results to stay in the race for the trophy.
