Ottniel Baartman set to ditch PSL team as lucrative IPL deal shakes things up

Date:

The growing trend of international cricketers abandoning the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) contracts is a concern for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). South African fast bowler Ottniel Baartman recently became the latest name to withdraw from his commitments in Pakistan.

The Proteas bowler Ottniel Baartman’s withdrawal delivers another blow to the Pakistan Super League. With multiple IPL franchises currently battling severe fast-bowling injury crises, team managements are targeting ready-to-play overseas replacements who are signed for the overlapping Pakistani domestic tournament.

Ottniel Baartman Abandons Hyderabad Kingsmen

Ottniel Baartman secured a contract worth PKR 1.1 crore to represent the Hyderabad Kingsmen during the PSL 2026 season. However, the South African fast bowler Ottniel Baartman has reportedly opted to withdraw from the tournament, likely to join an IPL franchise that is looking for an overseas replacement.

Keshav Maharaj had described Ottniel Baartman as the best death bowler in the country. He played a crucial role for Sunrisers Eastern Cape, helping them secure consecutive SA20 titles in 2023 and 2024. Baartman was also part of the South African team that reached the T20 World Cup final.

The right-arm pacer went unsold during the IPL auction last year but possesses franchise familiarity through his association with the Texas Super Kings. Since Texas serves as a sister franchise to the Chennai Super Kings, they could be looking at him as a potential injury replacement for Nathan Ellis.

IPL’s Financial Power Forces Overseas Players to Ditch PSL

The Indian Premier League offers unmatched financial incentives, forcing overseas professionals to make strategic career decisions. Players often choose the Indian tournament over the Pakistan Super League when overlapping schedules create direct conflicts.

Zimbabwean fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani recently ditched Islamabad United to join Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Last year, South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch abandoned Peshawar Zalmi after receiving a lucrative contract offer from the Mumbai Indians (MI).

These frequent withdrawals force PSL teams to constantly reshuffle their combinations and rely more heavily on local talent. The sudden withdrawal of overseas players impacts the overall quality of the competition while raising serious concerns for the Pakistan Cricket Board regarding the tournament’s stability.

IPL Injury Crisis Triggers Talent Drain From PSL

A severe spate of injuries across IPL teams has triggered a talent drain. Chennai Super Kings have lost Nathan Ellis, Rajasthan Royals have lost Sam Curran, and Kolkata Knight Riders have lost Harshit Rana. Franchises must now quickly find capable overseas replacements to fill these gaps.

Uncertainty also surrounds the early tournament availability of premium bowlers like Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Nuwan Thushara, and Matheesha Pathirana.

Consequently, IPL talent scouts are actively monitoring the Pakistan Super League to identify match-fit bowlers who can immediately adapt to high-pressure situations and Indian playing conditions.

Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson could be the next overseas professional to switch leagues. If the injury crisis worsens, Indian franchises might approach other active Pakistan Super League players, including Richard Gleeson, Alzarri Joseph, and Riley Meredith.
