Cricket Ireland (CI) announced a five-match ODI series against Afghanistan. The board announced the bilateral series despite its ethical concerns about the Taliban’s treatment of women and girls.
International teams such as Australia and England have suspended their matches against Afghanistan since the Taliban regained power in 2021. The Irish men’s team will play five ODI matches against Afghanistan from August 5 until August 14.
Sarah Keane as the chief executive of Cricket Ireland announced that the board invited the Afghanistan women’s team to play their matches in Ireland. She explained why the decision to conduct the men’s team’s international match was necessary.
Cricket Ireland has made a decision to play Afghanistan in Belfast this year. I want to tell you that financial matters and legal problems prevent me from doing so. The Cricket Ireland board reached this decision because the organization needs to operate according to its best interests which they did this week. Keane was quoted by ESPNcricinfo saying that Cricket Ireland made this decision which the board approved this week for organizational benefits.
Keane talked about Afghanistan regime and their treatment of women The entire Cricket Ireland board experiences moral discontent because Afghanistan regime has established systems that mistreat women and girls according to Sarah Keane. The Afghanistan women’s team can fortuitously benefit from this situation according to her explanation.
The decision about our current situation creates moral discomfort for me because I believe everyone here shares my viewpoint. The regime abuses women, which we all find repulsive. The Afghan women’s team, along with the displaced team, presents us all with an opportunity to create change.
