BCCI scraps opening ceremony! Virat Kohli’s RCB linked to shocking decision

Date:

The IPL 2026 will not witness any opening ceremony ahead of the start of the season. This decision has been taken by the BCCI to honour the dead from last year’s stampede tragedy after RCB’s maiden title celebrations at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The IPL is widely known for its large-scale celebrations. Over the years, many renowned singers and performers have performed in the IPL opening ceremony and such events. Last year, too, a grand opening ceremony was hosted by the BCCI at the Eden Gardens.

Renowned performers like Shah Rukh Khan, legendary singer Shreya Ghosal, and Karan Aujla were seen performing in the same event. Bollywood actress and performer Disha Patani set the stage on fire with her dance performance.

BCCI takes a major step to honour the victims of IPL 2025

The BCCI had decided to show sensitivity by remembering the 11 victims of the stampede tragedy in Bengaluru on the 4th of June, after RCB’s maiden title triumph celebrations were ruined by the tragic incident.

The BCCI has, hence, decided to skip the traditional opening ceremony of the IPL 2026. Hence, as a result of this, no celebrations will mark the opening of the IPL 2026 tournament. No such opening ceremony will be conducted before the Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Sunrisers Hyderabad match.

“Due to last year’s tragic incident on June 4 last year, there will be no formal function on the day of the start of IPL-2026 (in Bengaluru). The BCCI is not organizing any cultural or entertainment show at the start of IPL-19 as a mark of respect to the departed souls due to that tragedy on June 4, 2025,” BCCI secretary Devijit Saikia remarked, as quoted by TOI.

BCCI is planning a grand function to end IPL 2026

The BCCI and the IPL-governing committee, on the other hand, have planned to host a massive closing ceremony for the 19th season of the IPL on the day of the IPL final, which is on the 31st of May.

“However, the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council are planning a grand entertainment function at the closing of the IPL, on the day of the final (May 31),” Saikia told TOI.

Back in 2019, after the treacherous attack on Pulwama, which took the lives of 40 CRPF personnel, the BCCI was then run by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) that decided to snub the opening ceremony and allocate the funds to the families of the victims.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru return to host matches at the Chinnaswamy

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be hosting their home matches back in the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Bengaluru stadium was not considered ideal for hosting games after the infamous stampede incident last season.

The KSCA President and team worked hard to rebuild the stadium’s standards ahead of this season; hence, the Challengers would be playing 5 of their home matches at this venue, alongside one of the playoff matches and the finals.

Chinnaswamy would also host the first two home matches of this season. The first match is scheduled to be played against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on the 28th of March and then against the Chennai Super Kings on the 5th of April.
