IPL 2026, KKR vs SRH 6th Match Match Preview

Big picture – Battle of two weak bowling attacks

What was common between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders‘ respective opening games of the season? Both smashed 200-plus totals, only to be blown away in the chase, with bowling attacks that looked insipid.

As SRH and KKR clash at the Eden Gardens, a small ground which has been quite batting-friendly in recent times, the bowling attacks of both teams will again be in the spotlight. KKR have come into IPL 2026 with an attack missing key personnel due to injuries and unavailability. That was evident in the first game when MI chased down 221 without breaking a sweat, with the likes of Blessing Muzarabani, Vaibhav Arora and Kartik Tyagi not inspiring much confidence.

Add to that Cameron Green not bowling and unlikely to against SRH, and KKR look one of the weakest fast bowling attacks in the tournament. But that’s not their only problem. Their usually impenetrable spinners, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, hardly looked threatening against MI. Both bowlers will have their task cut out against some of the best spin bashers in the tournament in SRH’s top order.

Having said that, both Narine and Varun have a solid record at the Eden Gardens. No other bowler has more wickets at this venue in T20 cricket than Narine, while Varun is fourth on that list with 34 in 24 games. Will a return to familiar conditions bring back the wickets for KKR’s spearheads?

SRH, too have plenty of problems in their bowling unit, chief among them its one-dimensional nature. Jaydev Unadkat, David Payne and Harshal Patel are all similar bowlers; they rely more on cutters and variations for success. Brydon Carse, their out-and-out fast bowler, missed the opening game due to injury and is unlikely to feature in the KKR clash.

SRH sprung a surprise when they handed Nitish Kumar Reddy the new ball against RCB, instead of Eshan Malinga, who didn’t even bowl in the powerplay. Whether that was a one-off or a regular tactic from SRH remains to be seen, but they need to get their plans sorted at a ground where runs are expected to flow.

Key question – SRH’s combination

Team news & likely XIIs

Rahane limped off the field midway through the KKR-MI game due to cramps. He is, however, fit and expected to play the SRH clash. There are no changes expected with head coach Abhishek Nayar backing out-of-form Varun.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 Finn Allen*, 2 Ajinkya Rahane (capt), 3 Cameron Green*, 4 Angkrish Raghuvanshi (wk), 5 Rinku Singh, 6 Ramandeep Singh, 7 Anukul Roy, 8 Sunil Narine*, 9 Vaibhav Arora, 10 Varun Chakravarthy, 11 Blessing Muzarabani*, 12 Kartik Tyagi

Carse missed SRH’s opening game against RCB due to a hand injury. While there isn’t a fracture, he is unlikely to be fit for the SRH clash. That could mean Payne hangs onto his spot. There could also be a toss-up between Malinga and Liam Livingstone in the XII.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 1 Abhishek Sharma, 2 Travis Head*, 3 Ishan Kishan (capt & wk), 4 Heinrich Klaasen*, 5 Nitish Kumar Reddy, 6 Aniket Verma, 7 Salil Arora, 8 Harsh Dubey, 9 Eshan Malinga/Liam Livingstone*, 10 David Payne*, 11 Harshal Patel, 12 Jaydev Unadkat

In the spotlight: Aniket Verma and Finn Allen

Aniket Verma was one of SRH’s breakout stars in IPL 2025, his strike rate of 166.19 standing out. While he didn’t have a great Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (120 runs in nine innings) for Madhya Pradesh, it hasn’t affected his IPL form, judging by his 18-ball 43 in the IPL 2026 opener. In a line-up packed with audacious hitters, Aniket can easily be missed, but he is as important a cog among the SRH batting heavyweights.

If anyone had doubts about how Finn Allen would go on IPL debut, he quelled them very quickly in a 17-ball 37 against MI. Allen is in the form of his life. No other batter has more T20 runs than him in 2026: 732 in 17 innings at 48.80 and a strike rate of 193.13. He also has fond memories of the Eden Gardens. It was here where he obliterated South Africa in the semi-final of the 2026 T20 World Cup, recording an unbeaten 33-ball 100 as New Zealand chased down 170 in 12.5 overs. Just another such innings is all KKR will hope for from Allen.

Stats and trivia

  • Rahane is all set to play his 200th IPL game, the 11th player to achieve that mark in the tournament
  • He will have to be careful against Unadkat, who has dismissed him four times in six innings in the IPL
  • Allen has hit the most sixes in T20s in 2026: 52. Ishan Kishan is fifth on that list with 39
  • Klaasen has a terrific record against Narine and Chakravarthy in T20s. He’s never fallen to Narine in eight T20 innings before this and has scored 85 runs in 52 balls at a strike rate of 163.46. While he has been dismissed by Varun three times in nine T20 innings, he has also struck him for 112 runs in 53 balls, a strike rate of 211.32

Pitch and conditions – Runs, runs and runs

The match will be played on the same pitch as the New Zealand-South Africa World Cup semi-final last month. This is a traditionally high-scoring surface, which SRH head coach Daniel Vettori described as being grassier than usual. He also expects the surface will “hold” more than necessarily “turn”. The temperature is likely to hover around the late 20s to early 30s range on the Celcius scale.

Quotes

“We’re not expecting bowlers to go for six runs per over or seven per over because, in all likelihood, going for ten per over can actually be quite effective on these surfaces. We’ve changed our perspective of what a good day for a bowler is as opposed to three or four years ago.”
SRH head coach Daniel Vettori

“We have a bunch of talented cricketers who are lesser experienced, but are very talented cricketers. So it’s not a weak bowling attack, it’s a less experienced bowling attack. I feel with the kind of coaches we have in DJ [Dwayne Bravo] and Tim [Southee], you want to try and utilise this little time to equip them with whatever they feel can better overcome situations and back them. I think that is something that we need to do critically, but we’re trying as much as we can to give them that experience through the brains that we have in the support group.”
