Big MS Dhoni update: CSK set condition for his IPL 2026 comeback

Dewald Brevis MS Dhoni

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are likely to receive a big boost, with MS Dhoni and Dewald Brevis nearing full fitness after three consecutive losses in the ongoing tournament. According to a report from Indian Express, Dhoni and Brevis could return for Chennai Super Kings’ match against Delhi Capitals (DC).

Ahead of the Punjab Kings fixture, Dhoni trained and had an extensive batting session at the MAC B ground. On the eve of the match, he batted on the practice pitches in the main stadium without any discomfort. The Super Kings have given him time to recover fully, keeping him in contention for DC match.

MS Dhoni Set For Crucial Fitness Test Ahead Of DC Clash

MS Dhoni, who led Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles, has missed three matches due to a calf strain. He is set to undergo a crucial fitness test in the next two days ahead of the match.

If Dhoni passes the fitness test, he is expected to play against Delhi Capitals at Chepauk on Saturday. The wicketkeeper-batter injured his calf during the preparatory camp and has not featured so far in the IPL.

MS Dhoni has not been travelling with Chennai Super Kings for away matches. He was also absent at Chepauk for the important home game against Punjab Kings last Friday. Although Dhoni has been attending training sessions regularly, he has not been travelling to the stadium on match days due to protocols.

We Hope He Is Going to Be Right for the Next Game – Stephen Fleming

Chennai Super Kings could also get a boost with Dewald Brevis. The middle-order batter, known for his impact performances, has missed all three matches this season due to a side strain picked up during the pre-season camp.

Although he travelled with the squad to Guwahati and Bengaluru, he was not included in the XII as he was not fully match fit. Head coach Stephen Fleming said the team has taken a cautious approach and expects him to be ready for the next game, with five days available for recovery.

“We hope he is going to be right for the next game. We have five days between the next game. We have been conservative and hopefully, these next five days go as well as we have planned, and he is ready to go. It’s a big loss but we are looking forward to getting him back,” Fleming said.

MS Dhoni Last Played Against Gujarat Titans At Ahmedabad

MS Dhoni has not played a competitive match since CSK’s final league game of IPL 2025 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In recent seasons, he has continued to play despite injuries, including a major knee surgery after the 2023 title-winning campaign.

In IPL 2025, Dhoni scored 196 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 135.17. He also stepped in as captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out with an elbow injury following five matches. Chennai Super Kings finished at the bottom of the table for the first time in their history.

The team still has multiple wicketkeeping options in Sanju Samson, Kartik Sharma, and Urvil Patel. Among them, Samson, who joined recently and brings experience, has handled the gloves in Dhoni’s absence so far.
