In match no.47, the Mumbai Indians (MI) have been hosting the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The match was between the two bottom-placed sides in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The match was a virtual do-or-die battle for both sides. After the defeat tonight, LSG’s qualification becomes practically zero, though not mathematically zero immediately.
The two teams made some changes. Rohit Sharma, Raj Bawa, Corbin Bosch, and Deepak Chahar came into the side for the Mumbai Indians as Hardik Pandya was unwell, Suryakumar Yadav took charge of the side. The Super Giants made two changes, Akshat Raghuwanshi and Josh Inglis came into the side. SKY won the toss and opted to field first.
Nicholas Pooran comeback in form
After being put into bat first, Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis had a good start, but the latter was back scoring 13 off 5 balls. Nicholas Pooran and Marsh then went on an all guns blazing against the MI bowlers, and LSG scored 90/1 in the power play. Then the bowlers pulled a bit from 123/1, LSG were down to 160/5.
Pooran played a sensational knock of 63 runs off 21 balls, and Marsh scored 44 runs off 25 balls; they stitched a partnership of 93 runs for the second wicket. But after that, the flurry of wickets put the brakes on the runs, and LSG could only get to the score of 228/5 in the 20 overs, with Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh scoring 31 and 40, respectively, unbeaten.
Rohit and Rickelton wins it for MI
While chasing, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton were off to a breezy start, scoring 71 in the power play. They stitched a partnership of 143 runs and laid the foundation of the chase for the five-time winners. Rickelton and Rohit both missed their well-deserved hundred as they were dismissed on 83 and 84 runs respectively.
Naman Dhir and Suryakumar Yadav kept the runs flowing as the former came unbeaten with the score of 23* runs and finishing touch from Will Jacks MI kept their hopes alive for the playoffs after this win.
One of Mumbai’s greatest- Ryan Rickelton on opening with Rohit Sharma
Ryan Rickelton praises Rohit Sharma and shares his experience of opening alongside the former India captain. Ryan Rickelton also lauded Rohit as the India’s greatest batter of all time after the former’s winning Player of the Match.
Ryan Rickelton said, “(On the partnership with Rohit) One of Mumbai’s greatest, one of India’s greatest. I really enjoy spending time out there. We’re fortunate to get the wickets here. The Wankhede has been really good.”
“And we’ve been able to dovetail quite nicely and put bowlers under pressure at the right times and help each other out along the way. Rahul Sanghvi was telling me that my game suits this ground. Coming from Johannesburg at the Wanderers where you’re getting a lot of similar pace and bounce.”
Ryan Rickelton further added, “I didn’t believe it when he was telling me what this pitch would turn out to be for me. But, yeah, I really enjoy it. There’s nice pace in it, so you get great value for shots. And the ball really flies here. So I kind of adapted my game around our home venue. Always looking to get better, especially when we travel.”
“The IPL’s ridiculous in the way that these chases are being done nowadays. Like Surya said, I heard him saying, if you have a good start it just sets the platform. And I think that’s the trend in this team,” Ryan Rickelton concluded.
