David Miller reacts after being benched by DC in IPL 2026

As the IPL 2026 playoff race heats up, franchises are constantly tweaking their combinations in search of the perfect balance. Delhi Capitals (DC), who are battling inconsistency in the second half of the tournament, have also made several tactical changes in recent games. One of the biggest talking points has been the absence of veteran South African batter David Miller from the playing XI.

The experienced finisher, known for his composure under pressure and explosive strokeplay at the death, recently broke his silence on the situation and shared an honest reaction to being benched during a crucial stage of the season.

David Miller opens up on DC benching decision

Miller admitted that sitting out matches is never easy for any professional cricketer, especially during a tournament as competitive as the IPL. Speaking ahead of Delhi Capitals’ clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the left-hander said that while the decision was frustrating personally, he completely understood the team management’s thinking behind it.

“Obviously it is frustrating. You always want to play every game, but such is the IPL. The structure with only four overseas players in the XI means combinations become really important for the team. I’ve been around for a long time. This is not my first IPL, so I understand the make-up of teams. My focus is to keep giving positive feedback to the squad, remain supportive, and contribute whatever I can towards the team,” Miller said.

Despite missing out on recent games, Miller revealed that he is trying to stay involved with the group by supporting teammates and sharing his experience from the sidelines. The 36-year-old stressed that maintaining a positive dressing-room environment remains important during pressure situations late in the tournament.

Why DC left David Miller out of the playing XI

Delhi Capitals have struggled to find consistency during IPL 2026 and are still fighting to remain alive in the playoff race. In an attempt to improve team balance, the management has experimented with multiple combinations over the last few matches. One of the major reasons behind Miller’s absence has been the overseas player combination. The arrival and inclusion of players like Mitchell Starc forced DC to reshuffle their lineup, especially with the team looking to strengthen both their bowling attack and lower-order balance.

The franchise has also focused heavily on specific match-ups against opponents, which resulted in Miller being pushed to the bench despite his experience and finishing reputation. Importantly, Miller has avoided creating any controversy around the decision and instead backed the team-first approach. He emphasised that every player wants opportunities but accepted that combinations are a key part of T20 cricket.

Delhi Capitals still searching for momentum in IPL 2026

Delhi Capitals remain under pressure as the league stage enters its final phase. The side has struggled for momentum in crucial matches and continues to search for the right combination capable of delivering consistent performances. While Miller has missed recent games, his vast IPL experience and ability to handle high-pressure chases could still become valuable for DC in the remaining fixtures. The franchise may yet turn back to the South African veteran if they require additional firepower and stability in the middle order. For now, Miller remains focused on supporting the squad and staying prepared for whenever the next opportunity arrives.
