Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) opener Jacob Bethell has responded to the debate involving former England captains Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen over his career decisions. The young batter defended his choice to continue playing in the IPL instead of returning to England for domestic red-ball cricket.
Cook stated that playing in the County Championship for Warwickshire would help Bethell for the Test series against New Zealand instead of remaining on the bench for RCB. However, Pietersen argued that training alongside world-class players in the IPL environment would accelerate the youngster’s development.
I Think I’ve Made the Right Decision – Jacob Bethell Defends IPL Choice
Jacob Bethell opened up about the debate surrounding his development and career choices. The left-handed batter said that people may hold different opinions, but he believes spending time in India and learning alongside top international players is the right step for his growth.
“This is the marquee tournament of the year, with some of the best cricketers in the world playing in it. Everyone thinks differently, but from a personal point of view, I think I’ve made the right decision. This is the marquee tournament of the year, with pretty much all of the best cricketers in the world playing in it,” Bethell told reporters ahead of the IPL 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians.
I’m Pretty Happy With Where I Am – Jacob Bethell
Jacob Bethell further stated that he does not believe his IPL stint will negatively affect his development or future career. The young batter said that he is happy with his current situation and feels the experience will only help him improve as a cricketer.
“I definitely don’t think it’s going to hurt my career or stop me from getting better. I think it’s going to do the opposite. Everyone’s allowed to think what they want. That’s absolutely fine. Everyone thinks differently, but from a personal point of view, I think I’ve made the right decision. At the end of the day, I’m pretty happy with where I am,” he added.
Bethell began the tournament on the bench as RCB preferred the opening partnership of Virat Kohli and Phil Salt. He received his opportunity only after Salt suffered a finger injury and returned home for medical scans. However, the youngster has struggled for consistency since entering the playing XI.
I Never Really Feel Like I’m Fighting for a Spot – Jacob Bethell
Jacob Bethell stated that his focus remains on contributing to team success rather than worrying about his place in the playing XI. The youngster admitted that he has not delivered the starts he expected from himself so far in the tournament.
“I never really feel like I’m fighting for a spot. At the end of the day, I haven’t scored the runs I’ve wanted to. And that’s not helped the team. My aim as a batter is to go out there and score runs and get us off to a good start, and I haven’t done that,” said Bethell.
“So it’s not from a place of looking behind my back and fighting for a spot, it’s more from a hunger to actually contribute to this team. It doesn’t feel good when you’re not contributing to any wins. And especially now that we’ve lost the last couple of games, there’s a burning desire in there to go out there and put in a match-winning performance,” he added.
Bethell has recorded scores of 14, 20, 5, and 4 so far, averaging 10.75 with a strike rate of 138.70. Royal Challengers Bengaluru will next face Mumbai Indians in Raipur, where a victory could move them closer to the top of the IPL 2026 points table.
