Jasprit Bumrah might be dropped from the Mumbai Indians squad if they are eliminated after a defeat against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, former MI pacer Mitchell McClenaghan opined that Bumrah should be part of all of the remaining games for MI this season.
The Mumbai Indians have had another poor season. Over the last five editions of the IPL, the five-time champions have not made it to a single final and have finished towards the end of the points table in alternate seasons.
After having made it to the playoffs in IPL 2025, the Hardik Pandya-led side is currently in the 9th position after having won only three out of their ten matches in the season. They are on the verge of elimination and are in a do-or-die situation every time they step on the field.
Jasprit Bumrah might be dropped by MI if they lose against RCB.
The Mumbai Indians are currently in an all-win situation, and hence a defeat in any of the upcoming matches would confirm their elimination from the contest. Mitchell McClenaghan opined that Jasprit Bumrah might no longer be part of the Mumbai Indians setup if they lose their next game against the Challengers.
“I could imagine that if they don’t win this one, then he may not play. But the schedule for them towards the backend is not too bad. There’s been a little bit of a rest now to regroup, and I thought his pace was up against Chennai [Super Kings].
“So, I feel like he’s had a little bit of a break. I’m not overly concerned, but I imagine if they’re out of the tournament, he won’t play again,” said Mitchell McClenaghan.
“It’s such a joy to watch Jasprit Bumrah bowl.”: Ex-MI pacer backs Bumrah to regain form
MI will clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur in the evening clash on the 10th of May. The playoff spot seems much more distant for the five-time champions.
During the discussion on ESPNcricinfo Timeout, McClenaghan opined that the MI star pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, has been injury-prone, despite which he should be part of the MI playing XI for the remainder of the matches. He claimed that Bumrah was just starting to gain some good form.
“So I think for MI fans, they’ll be hoping for a win, because it’s such a joy to watch Jasprit Bumrah bowl. I think he’s just starting to get back to some really solid form,” the former MI bowler added.
Deep Dasgupta claims this season to be a massive year for MI ‘in terms of retentions.’
The Mumbai Indians have been losing games repeatedly this season. Deep Dasgupta pointed out that after such a disappointing season, the MI management might not be retaining all of their senior players and would rather aim to build a new core with some younger cricketers.
“They are not out, but then again, I guess there’s a lot riding on this. MI-RCB, you know it’s a big one. Also, I don’t know why, but I get a feeling it’s a big year, thinking about what might happen next year, in terms of retentions.
“Are they going to take a different angle to it and see youngsters and stuff like that? I just get a feeling from that perspective as well; these last few games can be very important,” said Deep Dasgupta.
