RCB GOAT issues open challenge to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

At the age of only 15, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has taken the cricket fans to a different level. Despite the presence of superstars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the teenage batter remains one of the major talking points among cricket fans since his debut in the Indian Premier League in the 2025 season with the Rajasthan Royals.

There is no doubt that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is extremely talented and knows how to clear the very well. Former cricketers and legends like Michael Vaughan, Alastair Cook, and many others are mesmerized by his skills. As of now, it is only a matter of time before making a debut on the international stage with the senior Indian National cricket team.

AB de Villiers discusses Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s career through a new lens

While everything is going in favor of the batter, former South Africa captain and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) legend AB de Villiers wants to see more of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s batting before calling him a T20 specialist for the rest of his life.

The former cricketer stated that at such a young age, what the Rajasthan Royals batter has done for the franchise and for the Under-19 Indian cricket team is incredible. But will he be able to last long? AB de Villiers has doubts.

I don’t know if Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is going to last: The RCB legend

“I don’t know if he’s going to last, to be honest. That’s what I tell my brothers and friends. At this age, it’s just absolutely incredible. We know the talent is there, but I would like to see him in other formats. In Test cricket, he doesn’t get to know what you’re in for,” AB de Villiers said on the ‘For the Love of Cricket’ podcast hosted by Stuart Broad and Jos Buttler, as a guest.

Villiers’ view is clear. He will call Vaibhav Sooryavanshi a specialist batter in the Twenty20 format until the batter proves himself in the Tests and ODIs as well. The former South African batter believes that Sooryavanshi has all the tools in his bag. But it will be interesting to see how the budding talent will deal with future endeavors.

Villiers asks Sooryavanshi to prove himself in the other formats as well

“A lot of things will change unless someone comes around and says to him… Listen, you will be a T20 specialist for the rest of your life. Congratulations, that’s all you’re going to do. Then there will be a very long and successful career, but if he does start nibbling around in ODIs, particularly Test cricket, he will discover a whole different area of his cricket, mentally and physically,” the RCB legend explains.

“Does he have the talent to counter all the obstacles that might come his way? Definitely, but it won’t be an easy ride. It will be a rocky road. I hope he goes that route and plays Test cricket for his country. I would love to see that journey unfold,” he concluded.
